Bealtaine Festival

Bealtaine Festival Bealtaine festival celebrates creativity as we age! Over 120,000 people now take part in Bealtaine. Dublin City Council is an investment partner. Read more here

May belongs to the Bealtaine festival, celebrating creativity as we age! From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists. It is a chance for people to make new and challenging work, a chance to communicate traditions between the generations. It is a chance for the novice to discover a talent until then unse

en and a chance for a long-dormant skill to find a new outlet. Each year, Age & Opportunity invites local authorities, arts centres, libraries, Active Retirement groups, care settings, community groups and clubs, associations from every part of the country to run Bealtaine events that celebrate creativity as we age. Age & Opportunity instigates or supports a number of events each year that are trying something new. Examples in the past have been bringing Liz Lerman Dance Exchange to Ireland for workshops and performances, nurturing the performance piece Silver Stars to a full production (which has gone on to sell-out performances in the Dublin Theatre Festival and featured off-Broadway in the ‘Under the Radar’ festival in New York) or EnvisAge, a creative project that attempts to re-imagine care settings for older people in a whole new way. Bealtaine is an Age & Opportunity initiative part-funded by the Arts Council and delivered by hundreds of organisations around the country. In 2009, we published a major independent evaluation of the Bealtaine festival by the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology in the National University of Ireland, Galway which is available on the Age & Opportunity website. The Bealtaine Festival is supported by older artists who became Bealtaine Ambassadors.

The Hyde Bridge Gallery is delighted to support and link with this years Bríd Festival Sligo for the group exhibition 'Holding Ground'
The exhibition is overseen and curated by Catherine Fanning Visual Artist

Exhibition Opening: 5:00pm, Saturday 31 January 2026 Venue: Hyde Bridge Gallery, Sligo

Holding Ground is a highlight event of Bríd Festival Sligo 2026, presenting a powerful group exhibition inspired by St Brigid as a figure of renewal and marking Imbolc as a time of transition, awakening and care.

Rooted in the spirit of Brigid, this exhibition explores acts of ecological, cultural and personal care, positioning women’s creative practices at a threshold between nature and culture, past and future. Here, the act of making becomes an act of tending, holding and sustaining — a quiet but vital form of resistance, connection and continuity.

Through diverse artistic approaches, Holding Ground invites audiences to reflect on the ways we nurture what matters, protect what is fragile, and imagine new futures grounded in care. The exhibition highlights women’s creative practices as a dialogue with the environment, exploring our connection to the land and the ways making can nurture, protect, and sustain the natural world.

Participating Artists: Bernie Calhoun, Aideen Connolly, Clare Doohan, Lucy Goodier , Anna Leask - Art and PhotographyLeask, Sarah Ellen Lundy-Visual + Sound Artisth , Rebecca Massey Art & Music , , , , , Karen Webster.
