Course overview

During this course, participants will learn the principles and practical approach to sketching. The primary aim is to develop a consistent sketching practice, which plays a vital role in long-term artistic development. The course also offers space for experimentation with a variety of materials and encourages new ways of observing and interpreting subject matter.

Fundamentals of Drawing

Course overview:
This course explores universal artistic principles that form the foundation of art and apply across all visual disciplines. Over four weeks, participants will engage in an in-depth study of still life composition using geometric solids, plaster casts, and other objects selected to match individual skill levels. Suitable for artists of all experience levels.

Just four colours – yellow ochre, ivory black, vermilion, and white – yet it can unlock a full range of life-like flesh tones. Swedish painter Anders Zorn used this limited palette to create some of the most luminous portraits in art history.

Welcome to Classical Art Studio! For those of you who don’t know us, here’s a bit about what we do.

Classical Art Studio is an art school based in Slane, Co. Meath, teaching traditional techniques of drawing and painting.

At CAS, we focus on learning to truly see and understand the underlying structure of form, combining a visual and constructive approach to drawing, as taught in classical ateliers.

Our courses cover a range of subjects, including portrait, landscape, still life, but we always return to the same place: drawing.

We place a strong emphasis on the fundamentals composition, proportion, light and shadow, and a systematic working process from general to detail. We rely on time-tested methods that build solid skills through practice.

A strong foundation gives you the freedom to develop your own work over time, whether that leads towards realism or a looser, more expressive approach.

Whether you’re new to art-making or returning to your practice after some time, drawing is a skill anyone can learn.

We have a mix of complete beginners and more experienced artists in the studio, and both tend to benefit from the same thing: slowing down and focusing on the fundamentals.

Groups are small, with plenty of individual guidance, in a calm and focused environment.

Studio is led by Nina Ruminska, an academy-trained, practising artist who brings her experience in classical drawing to the studio.

In this workshop, we will explore colour relationships and paint handling in portraiture. Working with the limited Zorn palette of just four colours, we will focus on creating convincing, natural-looking skin tones.
