From the Skelligs to the Stars π
So now you know what was in the boxβ¦ itβs time to tell you what we are going to do with it.
On the 3rd and 4th of October, Anita, Rebecca and Olha are taking on a 48-hour challenge at the Portmagee Domes: building all 7,500 pieces of the LEGO Millennium Falcon.
And we are doing it to raise money for our work with young people here in South Kerry.
Our first goal is β¬6,500, which will help us keep our core programme running. If we reach β¬9,000, it will support our FIRST LEGO League programme through to the Regional Final. And if we reach β¬11,500, we can support the team to travel to the All-Ireland Final if they qualify.
Anything we raise beyond that will help us start something we have wanted to do for a while: A Youth SPACE Astronomy Club, giving local young people more opportunities to explore astronomy and space science through activities, workshops, trips and meeting people working in the field.
And it seemed only right to do all of this with a Millennium Falcon.
Especially here, Portmagee is the gateway to the Skelligs, where the Falcon brought Rey in search of Luke Skywalker. We are in the Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve and our build takes place just as World Space Week begins.
The Falcon itself has travelled a fair distance to get here too. It was first built in the US in 2019 and has since been passed from LEGO builder to LEGO builder, accompanied by a logbook recording its journey. We are its first stop outside the US.
Its next chapter starts in Portmagee, where the three of us will attempt to rebuild all 7,500 pieces in just 48 hours.
