Following the resounding success of Killer Joe at New Theatre Dublin, Tavistock Arts is delighted to announce that their latest production is The Highest House on the Mountain by John B.Keane.
This is a play about the timeless battle between the forces of tradition and change. Widower Mikey’s two sons return from England to the family farm, but for very different reasons. Connie is in desperate financial trouble and fled overnight without even having the time to pack a suitcase. Patrick has had a grim life on the streets in London, and like his new wife Julie, harbours dark secrets. Mikey’s brother Sonny and Connie’s lover Sheila also hide secrets. Once the veil of secrecy is stripped away, nothing will ever be the same again.
The Highest House on the Mountain played before packed houses on its release and was critically acclaimed. The Irish Times described it as Keane’s best play. It is therefore surprising that it has been rarely presented in recent times as it richly deserves to be enjoyed by modern audiences. This is a wonderful opportunity to savour one of Ireland’s greatest playwright’s hidden gems. Here is a play which combines all the tragic power associated with The Field, without losing the unique comic appeal found in such Keane gems as Big Maggie.
Cast: Gerard Adlum, Dave Curry, Dave Fleming, Rebecca Guinnane, Eimear Kenny, Keith Millar, Brian Murray and Geoff O’Keeffe.
Tickets are priced at €15/ €12/€10.

A note for editors:
Tavistock Arts
Tavistock Arts is a Leinster based theatre production company founded by Jim Ivers in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. The company features an ensemble of actors and technicians who are encouraged to contribute creatively throughout the process of bringing theatre from page to stage. Combining original new writing and selected contemporary and canonical texts, Tavistock Arts aims to explore the unconscious subtext of plays and to promote a fresh and provocative approach to theatre: challenging and entertaining audiences in the process.
Jim Ivers
Following that old cliché, a mid-life crisis, Jim Ivers decided to put aside a business career in order to pursue a life-long love for theatre. He obtained an M.Phil. in Theatre & Performance at Trinity College Dublin where he studied playwriting under Marina Carr. His directing style is based upon a forensic interaction with the text so that the ensemble is liberated to explore and release subconscious meaning hitherto uncovered.
John B.Keane
Born in Listowel, County Kerry in 1928, John B.Keane, playwright, poet and fiction writer is probably Ireland’s best loved literary figure. Initially rejected by the Abbey Theatre, his plays were greeted by huge enthusiastic audiences throughout the country and it was obvious that he had cut through the repressive climate of his era and made a connection with the public at large. In time even the Abbey Theatre joined the clamour to put on Keane’s plays and long before his passing in 2002 he had become firmly established as one of Ireland’s greatest dramatists. Among his notable plays are Sive, Sharon’s Grave, Year of the Hiker and The Field, which was made into a successful film by Jim Sheridan.
