On 24th April the Silvermines Folk Choir held a musical themed table quiz to raise funds for Milford Hospice and in memory of their fellow choir member Mary Ryan-Mulqueen who had received great care from Milford Hospice before her passing last year. Mary was a much-loved member of the choir and a huge part of the Silvermines parish community.

Great fun was had on the night at Hickeys Bar in Silvermines and the Folk Choir would like to thank all the spot-prize sponsors and all those who donated to the fundraiser including Tommy Hickey for looking after us all so well on the night. Mary Ryan-Mulqueen was fondly remembered in chat and song throughout the night with a huge number of her family and friends in attendance. Five thousand five hundred and sixty euro was raised on the night.

In love and light

Since hearing the news of our incredible friend’s passing, I’ve been reflecting on the role she played in our tight-knit group.

I wrote down a few thoughts about the ultra-organised and ever-stylish Mary Ryan Mulqueen; a woman whose presence left a mark on all of us.

May she rest easy and peacefully.

"She passed from here.
Not with fanfare,
not with noise, but with the quiet dignity she always carried.

Like a song that ends too soon,
Mary leaves the air
humming with her grace.

I remember she'd glance at the back row
during choir rehearsal.
A side-eye and mischievous smirk that said so much.

It was placed as perfectly as the sunglasses on her head.

That glance only meant one thing for me:
I was about to break into laughter.

She was fun.
She was mindful.
She was an enigma; a driving force behind everything she stood for.

Her presence wasn’t loud, but it echoed.

Not just in the harmonies she wove behind me,
as we sang "My chains are gone, I've been set free", but in the way she'd reach out when my voice trembled.

A hand to my shoulder.
A silent kind of strength.

She was matriarchal— commanding in quiet ways.

Always catching what others missed:
a quiver of doubt,
a sigh held too long,
a heart breaking behind a melody.

And without fail ... she showed up.

With heart.
With humor.
With poise that didn’t need proving.

She’ll be missed— now, and always.

Another smile.
Another laugh.
We’ll forever wish to see and hear again.
Another spot in the choir never to be filled.

Tonight, as we gather in Mary’s memory,
we gather for each other.

To lift our friends and loved ones up and to lay our hand on the shoulder of someone who needs it most...
..just as Mary would have done."
