One of the most useful exercises a painter can do when learning about colour is creating a colour chart.

By systematically mixing combinations across your palette, you begin to see just how many colour variations are possible — often far more than you expect. What might look like a small selection of paints can actually produce over a hundred different mixtures.

Once the chart is created, it becomes a really practical reference to keep beside you while painting. Instead of guessing or second-guessing your mixes, you can quickly see how colours relate to one another and build more confidence in the choices you make.

It’s a simple exercise, but it can completely change the way you approach colour in your work.
