What Microwaves Do Best – A Handy Guide for Veggies & Carbs

Today, we're sharing a quick and helpful chart to make cooking vegetables and carbohydrates in the microwave a breeze.

The key to great microwave cooking? Steam. Using a loosely fitting cover is essential—it traps steam, allowing your microwave to deliver results that rival traditional cooking methods.

Step 1: Get the Right Container
Start with a microwave-safe container that has a loose-fitting lid, like our Microwave Steamer found here: https://wave-ware.com/products/microwave-steamer
Always check that your container is made from microwave-safe materials and can handle the high temperatures of steam.

Step 2: Follow the Right Cook Times
Use our cooking chart to find the ideal times for various vegetables and carbs in a 900W microwave.
Avoid lifting the lid during cooking—this releases valuable steam and can affect your final results. Trust the process and the timing!

It’s a simple way to get perfectly steamed results, every time.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the chart and how it works for you—let us know your experience!

Metal in the Microwave? It’s Not as Explosive as You Think!

We’ve all seen those cliché movie scenes where someone throws metal into a microwave, and BOOM—it’s a massive explosion. The microwave turns into a fiery inferno, and the hero narrowly escapes. Classic, right? But in real life, that’s not how it works. It turns out, aluminum (the shiny metal) is actually pretty safe when it comes to microwaves. In fact, it’s all over your microwave already.

Here’s the Science (No Explosions, I Promise)
Microwaves bounce off metal, and if the metal has sharp edges, it can cause a little spark. But smooth, rounded metal? Totally fine. It's important to note that metal trims and metallic paints can and will cause problems as they are not one continuous piece and consist of a series of dots. They are distinct and will arc to each other.
Modern microwaves use anodized aluminum to coat their interior, which acts as an extra layer of protection. It reduces the strength of sparks and just leaves a harmless stain on the surface.

So, go ahead and use that metal plate in your microwave. It actually helps brown and sear your food! But, for the love of popcorn, skip the tin foil "bomb" experiment. No need for that Hollywood drama.

Why You Should Use a Plate Warmer

Ever wondered why your food heats up so quickly in the microwave? It's because of water! Water molecules are super excited by the microwave energy (they vibrate like crazy) and since food is mostly water, it heats up fast. So, why not use that same magic to warm up your plates?
If you put an empty plate in the microwave, it’ll get warm in a couple of minutes. But here's the catch: microwaves are only heating up the tiny bit of moisture in the ceramic, not the plate itself. This results in a lot of untapped microwave energy, which will slowly but surely damage your oven.
Enter the plate warmers! These nifty gadgets can heat your plates in about 30 seconds, absorbing all of the available microwave energy. The plate warmer will heat the center of the plate (business area) and leave the edges cool to the touch for easy handling!
So, why risk it? Let your plate warmer do the job, and keep your microwave in top shape!

How do you cook your spuds? You maybe ignoring a magnificent omni-chef in the corner. The microwave oven may be the fastest and the cheapest but it is also, hands down , the best way to produce perfect boiled potato Did you know that the valuable water-soluble nutrients vitamins C and B6 are lost when boiling.

Here's how we do it.
perforate the skin 3 or 4 times with a fork to prevent the potatoes from bursting. The perforations allow the steam to escape and the vented hot steam heats the outer skin. It is important to trap this steam with a cover (using only the Waveware Cover, of course!)To cook the perfect potato select evenly sized potatoes and arrange them uniformly in a dish, stab on all sides with a fork and cover to retain the steam produced. Here's a dish I prepared before we came on the air. The steam temperature heats the skin and allows it to slide off the potato. The key is the cooking time. Do not lift the lid until the cooking time and standing time has expired.
Potatoes 1 2 3 stand time

Samll 3 min 3½ min 4 min 3

Medium 3.5 min 5 min 8 min 4

Large 4 min 6 min 10 min 5

If cooking directly on the turntable, turn half way. If cooking just one potato, cook on the turntable and cover with an inverted bowl -

That’s my first blog done. Please feel free to comment below. Whilst I have a very fragile ego I will not reach perfection without your valuable critique.

One of the big performance metrics for Amazon is the customer response time. Amazon requires that you respond to all queries/complaints within 24 hours. With the help of a new app, I am hoping to get my response times down to 5 hours average. Lets see how I do.

"Steaming requires minimal prep, and since it works so fast, it won’t spike your kitchen temperature especially if you use a microwave" Waveware agree! We couldn't live without our microwave steamer.

It’s hard to get excited about steamed vegetables. When done poorly, they range from totally unremarkable to actively disgusting—but done right, they’re absolutely transcendent. As we head, at long last, into peak spring and summer produce season, I think this underrated technique deserves ano...
