Our U14 boys made the trip to Mungret for Round 2 of the SFAI National Cup, with both teams battling it out in lovely sunshine in a very tight and competitive encounter.
The opening 15 minutes were largely played around the middle of the park, with the long grass making it difficult for both teams to get the ball moving. Celtic were first to threaten, but two fine saves from the Mungret goalkeeper kept the game scoreless.
Mungret took the lead on the 20th minute when a low shot from outside the box was brilliantly turned around the post by Celtic goalkeeper Sean Musgrave. Unfortunately, Celtic failed to clear the resulting corner, allowing Mungret to tap home and make it 1–0.
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with both sides struggling to take control. Celtic thought they had equalised 10 minutes in, but Seanie Kissane’s low drive went inches wide.
Mungret doubled their lead 15 minutes into the half following a defensive lapse, which allowed their forward to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper and finish into the bottom-left corner.
However, Celtic responded brilliantly. Within five minutes, Seanie Kissane produced a great run before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the bottom-left corner to bring Celtic back into the game.
Celtic piled on the pressure, but some desperate Mungret defending and a number of late challenges kept them at bay. Four Celtic players were forced off injured as the intensity increased, with the referee eventually issuing no fewer than five yellow cards to Mungret players.
With five minutes remaining, Celtic got the equaliser their efforts deserved. Great work down the right from Bradley Enright produced an excellent cross, which Tyler Enright met superbly to make it 2–2!
Extra time followed, with little to separate the sides in the first period. Celtic, with injuries mounting and players visibly tiring, were forced into a rear-guard effort in the second half, while Mungret struck the crossbar.
With the scores still level after extra time, the tie went to penalties. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Celtic, who hit the crossbar twice, as Mungret won the shootout 3–0.
A tremendous battling performance from the lads, who showed great character to fight back from two goals down and force extra time despite the injuries and difficult conditions.
Man of the Match: Abraham Newlands, who was excellent at centre-half from start to finish.
Thanks to all who travelled and to Mungret Regional for the refreshments afterwards for the team and travelling supporters much appreciated.
