Sheila Armstrong is a writer from the north-west of Ireland. She is the author of How To Gut A Fish, a collection of short stories, and two novels, Falling Animals and The Red Mouth.

Her work has been translated into over ten languages and nominated for the Irish Book Awards, the Society of Authors Awards, the Kate O’Brien Award, the Edge Hill Prize, the RSL Ondaatje Prize and the European Union Prize for Literature.

Laetitia Devaux is a French translator working from English into French. She studied French and English literature in Paris and Dublin. Since then – for the past 30 years – she has cultivated her passion for Irish life, literature, and pubs.

She is the French translator of Irish writers such as Sebastian Barry, Sally Rooney, and Eimear McBride. Over the past few years, she has also begun scouting for new literary voices in Ireland. As a result, she now translates Anne Walsh Donnelly, Louise Hegarty, Mark Gyves, and Catherine Prasifka, all of whom are debut novelists. And, of course, Sheila Armstrong, with whom she will be in conversation at the festival.

Out of over 800 entries, the Irish Writers' Centre have announed the 12 winners of their International Debut Novel Competition.

Write By The Sea previous author, Fiona Ennis, is one of the prize recipients this year.

The twelve winning writers will now have the opportunity to skip the traditional publishing queue, pitching their debut novels directly to leading publishers and literary agents.

We’re please to announce that the judges have selected our 2026 longlist. The calibre of submissions this year was extraordinary, and the judges had a challenging task in selecting the longlist.

If your piece made the list, feel free to shout about it on social media, but please do not identify which piece is yours.

If your piece didn't make the list this year, don't lose heart. Writing, reading and judging are highly personal and subjective pursuits. Keep the faith, keep writing, and keep sharing your work!

Lovely mention for Andrew Cunning, in The Irish Times this week! ✨

In a piece about novels that stay with you, Patrick Holloway (author of "The Language of Remembering") writes that reading Andrew's debut novel, Clara and Christina was "the most wondrous reading experience" and says the book is "the most impressive debut I have read for a very long time."
