The RTE News article below is worth a read if you've got a few minutes. Ireland is disappearing before our very eyes, and NOBODY is doing anything about it. The Shops, Post Offices, Pubs, Garda Barracks are vanishing as we bury our heads in the sand. These are the very things that glue communities together....... As they disappear, so too does the whole concept of community.
It's hard to blame people for turning their backs on the pubs..... It's become too expensive. But this isn't the publican's fault. By the time the Government and the Breweries have had their considerable slice, there's scarcely enough to keep the lights turned on. This Government and previous governments have all had a hand in killing the Irish Public House. It's been going on for 25 years or more.
The Irish Pub IS and WAS primarily a meeting place. Deals were done, sport was analyzed, marriage was proposed, divorce was celebrated, horses were sold, lost loved ones were mourned, new arrivals were "christened" properly...... Almost everything that makes up what it is to be Irish can be found in the Pub......
Where do tourists from all over the world end up when they come here??.... And Why???
Pubs and all other small businesses are being taxed and levied out of existence. There's no incentive for the entrepreneurial business person anymore. If things don't soon change it'll be too late. Perhaps it's too late already....😔
A new report shows a rapid decline in the number of pubs in Ireland, with 2,205 premises - or one-in-four - closing their doors since 2005.
