Cutest lil’ Frozen Charlotte t**h, Ever! ‘Frozen Charlotte’ was a specific type of china doll made in the form of a standing naked figure moulded as one solid piece. The dolls were very popular in the Victorian era, with production starting in the mid-1800’s and ending in the 1920’s. Most were made in Germany. Smaller versions of the dolls were known as ‘penny dolls,’ because they were often sold for a cent. Some dolls were used in dollhouses. Very small ones were used as charms in Christmas puddings.
Reputedly the name ‘Frozen Charlotte’ originated from a poem, which tells the sad story of a young girl, Charlotte, who refused to cover her pretty dress by wrapping up warmly during a sleigh ride, and froze to death during the journey. (This sweet baby - my fave in my small collection - was a b-day gift from my dear Scottish beach buddy, Nicola).
