McCarthy's Maze Trail

McCarthy's Maze Trail McCarthy's Maze Trail encompasses orienteering hunts in two mazes; a small maze and a large maze, both designed within a 5-acre field of corn maize.

2014 is the 7th consecutive year in which McCarthy's Maze Trail has opened to the public after first being set up in the summer of 2007. As August and September are the only months of the year that it is open, hundreds of visitors flock to McCarthy's Maze Trail every year for a day out, to explore and get lost in the mazes, and to enjoy a unique, fun-filled adventure. McCarthy's 5-acre field compr

ises of corn maize which reaches an impressive height of 10 feet. The field is divided into 2 sections through 2 different maze structures; a small maze and a large maze.
'The Small Maze' takes up approximately 1/4 of the field while 'The Large Maze' uses up the remainder of the field. Items are hidden in both mazes which must be searched for and found. The relevant information must then be recorded onto one's brochure in order to complete the maze challenge. In 'The Small Maze', the objective is to find each of the 6 animal statues hidden on the paths. The names and types of animals on each signpost, which can be located behind each statue, need to be written down on one's brochure when found. Another target is to find and ring the bell, which is positioned in the centre of the maze. Once all of this has been achieved, one can then leave 'The Small Maze' safe in the knowledge that they have passed the first challenge. Subsequently, one can then test their wits in 'The Large Maze' where there is a lot more ground to cover. In this maze, the aim is to find all 12 signposts hidden on the paths, each signpost will display a number between 1 and 12, and a symbol which represents a letter of the alphabet. One is able to decipher these on the 'Symbol Conversion Chart' on their brochure. When a signpost is discovered, one draws the symbol seen on the signpost into the corresponding star on their brochure. Each of the symbols found on the signposts are then de-coded into the letters, which they represent on the 'Symbol Conversion Chart'. Another goal is to find and ring the second bell, which is positioned in the centre of 'The Large Maze'. Once all of this has been completed, one leaves 'The Large Maze' and attempts to unscramble all the letters recorded on their brochure, and solve the anagram in order to become a trail master. As well as the 2 mazes in the corn maize field being the main attractions for McCarthy's Maze Trail, 2 different and unique brain-teasing mazes in the form of the 'No Left-Turn Maze' and the 'Jumping Maze' are also facilitated. In addition, the 'Tower of Hanoi' is a new, intricate puzzle that has proved very popular with visitors this year. There are also benches provided nearby for picnics. During the months of August and September, McCarthy's Maze Trail remains open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., 7 days a week (weather permitting). It is suitable for, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages, whether it be a family or a group of friends.
