Walking in the Footsteps of Patrick Kavanagh

On Monday, 12th October, Remembrance Run 5K founder Frank Greally will begin a five-day walk from Inniskeen to Dublin, retracing the journey made by poet Patrick Kavanagh in December 1939 when he travelled to visit writer George William Russell (AE).

Frank, founder of Irish Runner magazine, will visit primary schools along the route, beginning with St Daigh's National School, Inniskeen, before continuing to schools in Ardee, Slane and Ashbourne. During these visits, he will promote The Daily Mile initiative and encourage children to embrace friendship, kindness, gratitude and the benefits of regular exercise.

This is Frank's second long-distance walk of 2026. Earlier this year, to mark his 75th birthday, he walked from Dublin's Old Coombe Hospital, where he was born, to his hometown of Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. Through his "Gratitude Road" walks, Frank hopes to highlight the importance of active living and positive wellbeing at every stage of life.

A lifelong admirer of Patrick Kavanagh's poetry and prose, Frank says this walk has long been an ambition. The journey also ties into the upcoming Remembrance Run 5K in Phoenix Park on 8th November, an event he founded in memory of the late journalist and writer Con Houlihan, another great admirer of Kavanagh.

The walk will conclude on Friday, 16th October, at the Patrick Kavanagh Seat on Dublin's Grand Canal, arriving at approximately 2.00pm.

Delighted to announce, this years recipient of the Kavanagh Poetry Award is Belfast poet, Paul McMahon for his collection 'The Year I Painted the Humber Bridge'.

Runners up were Eamonn O'Sullivan and Noel Howley, with a further ten entries receiving a Highly Commended designation.

A journey through the animistic landscape of Tom Stack’s ‘No Earthly Estate: The Religious Poetry of Patrick Kavanagh’, Kyrie for Kavanagh explores the spiritual side of Kavanagh’s writing, with readings, recital and songs dedicated to the evergreen themes of reconciliation and redemption.

We are very excited to be working with Actor/Director Adrian Dunbar & Musician Nick Roth of Unreal Cities on the curation of this years Kavanagh Weekend 2026.

The first reveal of the programme includes a specially curated evening entitled Kavanagh and The Beats in which Unreal Cities present a late- night concert in which world-renowned actors and improvising musicians give voice to poetry, at the speed of jazz.
