Gort Arts was invited to the beautiful Azores last week, as part of the IN SITU Research Project gathering. 12 case studies came together to share experiences, insights, and inspiration , as well as the delights the city of Ponta Delgada offered. We were represented by our member Shona Macgillivray . It was a great opportunity to gain insight into other projects taking part, meeting other creatives, academics and researchers, and sharing experiences of creative place-based practices in rural areas. We are delighted to be part of the initiative and hope it goes from strength to strength.
What is
IN SITU is a European-funded innovation & research project oriented around cultural & creative industries (CCIs) located outside major urban centres.
It involves 12 projects (one being us, Gort Arts), 13 partners, across 12 European countries. Its focus is on supporting and developing CCIs in rural, remote or smaller-town contexts rather than big cities. Other projects are in countries including Iceland, Finland, Croatia, Latvia, and Portugal (Azores).
Why it matters
Cultural & creative industries (CCIs) are often concentrated in big cities; this project addresses the imbalance by helping non-urban areas build capacity, networks and innovation in their creative sectors.
By involving many different countries and contexts, the project can share learning across regions, adapt good practices to diverse non-urban settings, and help strengthen regional resilience through culture and creativity.
