It is said that Cleopatra wore an amethyst ring to bewitch lovers, grant protection, and instill a sober mind. The Ancient Egyptians considered this stone, which they called “hemag”, to be a symbol of intellect. Ancient Romans wore amethyst to attract affection, and their soldiers wore it to protect them on the battlefield. Amethyst is actually a purple variety of quartz, which gets its vivid color from the irradiation of iron impurities present in its makeup. Mined, prized, and used for adornment and magic since ancient times, this gem is said to prevent drunkenness, both literally and by calming the mind. It is a stone of tranquility, creativity, intuition, and intelligence, and is the birthstone for the month of February. Amethyst is thought to promote confidence, brighten one’s outlook on life, and assist with emotional healing. This stone is known to display pleochroism, an optical phenomenon where a gemstone changes color depending on the light and angle. Each stone pictured here appears warm or cool to the eye depending on the conditions.

All of these properties swirled in my mind as I crafted these amethyst and sterling silver pieces. In each one, the symbolism and power of amethyst (and iolite in one pair of earrings) combine with much of my signature imagery to grant the wearer ancestral magic and cosmic protection. The necklaces hang from 16” (round pendant), 18” (oval pendant & cauldron), and 30” (thistle sword) chains, while the rings are size 5 (stacker), 8.75 (triquetra ring), and 6.75 (two stone ring). Please note that the triquetra and two stone rings have triple split shanks which can feel more snug than the size they measure as, so some people may prefer to size up slightly for this style. The cuff measures 5 inches in total length with a 1 inch gap, which I consider an XS, but please measure your wrist to be sure. It is slightly adjustable. All of these handcrafted pieces of jewelry hit my virtual shelves tonight at 8pm et! 🖤
