Garry Hynes directs O’Neill’s final completed play, 'A Moon for the Misbegotten', starring Eileen Walsh, Marty Rea, Lorcan Cranitch, Rory Nolan and Cathal Ryan, with set and costume design by Francis O’Connor.

On a farm in rural Connecticut, we meet Josie Hogan (Eileen Walsh) and James Tyrone (Marty Rea), two wounded souls longing for escape – she from her life, and he from his loss.

Less than two weeks to go until Druid Theatre presents ‘A Moon for the Misbegotten’ by Eugene O’Neill, a masterpiece of American theatre from one of the great writers of the 20th century! 🌕🥃

O'Neill's gripping drama, directed by Druid and Galway legend Garry Hynes, stars Eileen Walsh, Marty Rea, Lorcan Cranitch, Rory Nolan and Cathal Ryan.

Eugene O'Neilll was a giant of American theatre, often credited with transforming American theatre and taking it “from the basement to the rafters.” O’Neill’s influence and popularity are reflected in the many honours he received, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize in Literature, and multiple Tony Awards.

This is an amazing chance to see a production written by O'Neill directed by one of Ireland's greatest theatre directors, Tony Award winning Garry Hynes.

'A Moon for the Misbegotten' will run at the Town Hall Theatre Galway from September 14th to 26th, after which it will move to the The Gaiety from October 1st to 4th as part of Dublin Theatre Festival.

Our upcoming production, 'A Moon for the Misbegotten', was Eugene O’Neill’s last completed play, written in 1943.

O’Neill was said to have been “born into a prop box.” His father, Irish immigrant actor James O’Neill, was a famous touring actor who took his family on the road during Eugene’s early years.

Often credited with transforming American theatre and taking it “from the basement to the rafters,” O’Neill’s influence and popularity are reflected in the many honours he received, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize in Literature, and multiple Tony Awards.

O’Neill died in 1953, and in 1967 he was commemorated by the United States Postal Service with this stamp.

Applications are now open for the Marie Mullen Bursary 2026.

The Marie Mullen Bursary is an annual award for women working on the island of Ireland as theatre artists in the fields of design, directing and dramaturgy.

Named in honour of actor and Druid co-founder, Marie Mullen, the bursary is intended to address a historic imbalance and to support the professional development of women in Irish theatre.

This bursary provides the chosen theatre artist with the time, physical resources and mentoring necessary to support their work.

Bursary winners often continue to work with Druid following the completion of their bursary years. Our current production ‘The Shaughraun’ has two bursary winners on the creative team - Sarah Baxter, Associate Director (Bursary Recipient 2020-2021) and Clíodhna Hallissey, Costume Design (Bursary Recipient 2019-2020)

Mark O Rudaigh is our latest Assistant Set Designer at . Mark will assist in the creation of the Set Design for Druid’s upcoming production of ‘A Moon for the Misbegotten ’, written by Eugene O’Neill and directed by Garry Hynes. 🎭

Following study of Architecture at University College Dublin (BSc, First Class, 2017), KTH Stockholm and Queens University Belfast (MA, First Class, 2020), Mark has developed a multifaceted arts practice ranging from formal architectural design to exhibition and installation design and curation, alongside artistic direction of community arts festivals and street theatre events. Through this work, Mark has gained extensive experience in arts management and administration and has garnered detailed and practical insight into construction craft and methodology in addition to collaborative production design and development.
Mark is passionate about storytelling and embodying feeling and narrative in space. He is looking forward to working with and learning the craft of set design from Francis O’Connor and the Druid Team and is grateful for this opportunity from ISPD which grants him the means to apply his honed architectural skills and understandings to the layered art of theatre and set design.
