“Shakespeare in Connemara” and “The Fashion Show” are two contemporary comedies from the pen of Gerry Conneely and produced by Espresso Productions.
Fashion Show is set in a community owned centre in Oranmore in Galway, the show tells the story of three brave girls operating a fashion design start up and of Paddy, the volunteer maintenance man of the premises. The relationship between Paddy and the girls is congenial and often inspirational. But while the girls go on to do extraordinary things, paddy is removed from his own paid position as the centre attempts to modernise. This is a fast paced comedy, uniquely Irish and local, with loads of belly-laughs and the occasional tear delivered by some of the finest performers in the city. Fashion Show will premier as part of the festival.
“Shakespeare in Connemara” has been performed previously at the Townhall Theatre and speculates on the origin of Shakespeare’s motivation in writing his famous tragedy, Macbeth. The hapless playwright’s fortunes decline with the death of his patron Queen Elizabeth I. He takes to drinking and naturally ends up on a boat to Connemara. There follows a series of events that even Shakespeare couldn’t think up, and so emerged, the Scottish Play.

ON SEPTEMBER 25 1915, 75,000 British soldiers rose from their trenches to attack German lines on Loos-en-Gohelle. By the end of the day, some 10,240 would be dead, with the six British divisions in action suffering more casualties per unit than on the first day of the Somme.
Two men who fought in, and survived the Battle of Loos wrote about what it was like to be involved in one of the bloodiest battles of WWI - Robert Graves in Goodbye To All That, and Irishman Patrick MacGill, in 'The Great Push'. MacGill's book has been adapted for the stage by Galway actor/writer Gerry Conneely.
Conneely plays an elderly MacGill reminiscing on that fateful day when he and his regiment, The London Irish, went over the top at Loos, in one of the first of the great heaves on the western front.
It follows the travails of MacGill and his companions from the day before, to the evening after, the attack. Practically all of the material in the show was written by MacGill within hours, sometimes even minutes of when the events occurred. The result is a unique insight into the consciousness of a man in extremis.
