Today we honor Annie Moore for her contributions to history as a woman and an Irish Immigrant.

She's a bit of a legend to us all. She made history at the age of 17 by being the very first immigrant to pass through Ellis Island when it opened in 1892 - and bravely making her way to the front of the queue to capture that honor.

Annie is immortalized in two monuments. One is at the port she left from: Cobh, County Cork, where millions of departing immigrants over the centuries saw their last glimpse of Ireland. And the second is at the Ellis Island Museum, commemorating where Annie and millions more from all over the world began new lives in America.

On International Women's Day we recognize Annie for the buanseasmhacht (perseverance) that left her name inscribed forever in history.

Some familiar faces in this lovely video by CIE tours. The tourism and hospitality sector had had a rough time, fingers crossed we won’t have to wait too long for visitors to return safely to our beautiful country. 🇮🇪

A young woman playing a harp to a large crowd in about 1910. The Harp has long been acknowledged as the national instrument of Ireland. Usually held by a female figure representing ‘Erin’, the instrument was a common sight at Gaelic revivalist events in the early twentieth century.

With thanks to Peter Donaghy.
