TULCA Festival of Art has run annually since 2002 and is an artist-centred festival of contemporary art that works with Irish curators to present innovative exhibitions across the city and county of Galway, Ireland. TULCA aims to create a meeting point in Galway in the field of visual arts between artists from various cultures and the audience. The festival has enabled the formation of an internat

ional cultural network between local and international organisations, collectives, artists, curators, galleries and art critics. Artists’ projects are selected via invitation and through an open call for proposals. Exhibitions take place in both gallery and non-gallery spaces, featuring projects and events across urban and regional contexts. A programme of talks, workshops and events accompanies the exhibitions and provides further opportunities for audiences to engage. Since being founded in 2002, TULCA has been curated by:

📣 TULCA 2026: Open Call

TULCA Festival of Visual Arts invites proposals from artists for Veruca Salt, curated by Sinéad Keogh.

Veruca Salt is a punk and women-led proposition that seeks to disrupt through transgressive agency and a strong sense of conviction. Marking 50 years since the emergence of Punk, this year’s festival draws on its spirit of resistance, DIY culture, and radical expression, asking what it means to know who you are, and to demand what you want.

We welcome artists working across disciplines, particularly those based in the West of Ireland, whose practices challenge dominant norms and operate beyond the mainstream.

Deadline for submissions: 30 April 2026, 5pm

ℹ️ Full details, including application guidelines and a curatorial statement, are available at www.tulca.ie/open-call-2026

TULCA Festival of Visual Arts is pleased to announce Sinéad Keogh as curator of the 24th edition of the festival.

A multimedia performance installation artist and curator, Keogh’s practice aims to engage audiences with countercultural, underground and alternative voices that are often absent from the mainstream arts scene.

“I am very honoured to be working with TULCA and to be developing a programme that platforms underrepresented communities, women’s groups, and artists working outside of conventional structures. The 2026 edition brings together these practices through a shared ethos of punk and DIY culture, with a focus on collaboration, collective action, and community engagement.” — Sinéad Keogh

Artist Insights | Mair Hughes

In this Artist Insights interview recorded during TULCA 2025, Mair Hughes reflects on the work presented as part of Strange lands still bear common ground, curated by Beulah Ezeugo.

Hughes’ installation A Field Guide to the Offa’s D**e explores the psychogeography of the Welsh borderlands through reflections on landscape, memory and dual Welsh–English identity. Drawing on the form of Offa’s D**e as a physical marker across the landscape, the work considers borders as spaces of ambiguity and creative potential.

Artist Insights | Caoimhín Gaffney

In this Artist Insights interview recorded during TULCA 2025, Caoimhín Gaffney reflects on the works presented as part of Strange lands still bear common ground, curated by Beulah Ezeugo.

The works shown form part of All at Once Collapsing Together, a series of medium-format photographs that act as mirrors to the healing the natural environment can offer. Text fragments infused with climate anxiety interrupt these scenes, framing them as fleeting and fragile while posing questions about recovery, trauma and the traces we leave on the earth.

Filmed at the TULCA Gallery in Hynes Building, the conversation offers insight into the ideas and research informing the work.

Artist Insights | Caroline Mac Cathmhaoil

In this Artist Insights interview recorded during TULCA 2025, Caroline Mac Cathmhaoil reflects on the development of Mirror States, a two-channel video installation presented at the TULCA Gallery as part of Strange lands still bear common ground, curated by Beulah Ezeugo.

The work places Ireland and Cuba in mirrored reflection, drawing on the historical comparisons once made between the two islands within revolutionary and political discourse. Through footage filmed in Havana and Dublin alongside archival material, the installation reflects on shifting histories of revolution, commemoration and political imagination.

Filmed at the TULCA Gallery in Hynes Building, the conversation offers insight into the ideas and research informing the work.
