Is Ireland using its EU presidency to build affordable homes, or are we just letting property developers call the shots?

Writing in the Irish Examiner, DCU's Dr Valesca Lima points out that cutting red tape for developers will not solve the housing crisis. She points out that rolling back rules has historically led to cramped apartments, weak tenant protections, and rising homelessness, while treating shelter as an investment rather than a basic need feeds far-right extremism across Europe.

Dr Lima makes the case that Ireland must use its leadership role to push for firm EU rules on quality, affordability, and renter safety. By tying EU funding directly to proper standards and social supports, Ireland can help make secure, affordable housing a human right for everyone.
