📢 Welcome Mike Vaughan & Exciting Community Improvements in Effin 📢

We are delighted to officially welcome Mike Vaughan as our Community Caretaker.

Mike's role includes maintaining and enhancing the village area, the Hall, the public spaces between the two Effin signs, and the church grounds. He is also working closely with the Graveyard Committee to help maintain our local graveyard.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Mike on board. In a short space of time, he has already carried out fantastic work throughout the parish, and his dedication, professionalism and pride in the community are evident in everything he does.

Mike, together with Ellen and Cian, has also been actively involved in a number of Tidy Towns projects, helping to improve and enhance our local environment. Their hard work, commitment and community spirit are making a real difference and are greatly appreciated.

🏡 Hall Improvements

Over the summer months, several improvement works have been carried out at the Hall.

✅ Through a Ballyhoura Rural Services Scheme, the pathways around the Hall have been power washed, and work is underway to remove ivy from the exterior boundary walls, helping to prevent further damage to the stonework.

✅ Thanks to funding from Limerick City and County Council, the area beneath the stage has been cleared and transformed into valuable storage space, complete with newly fitted doors.

✅ The Hall car park has also been resurfaced, improving both safety and accessibility for all users. We would like to sincerely thank Councillor Tommy O'Sullivan for his support in helping to secure this important improvement.

These projects represent significant investment in our community facilities, and we are grateful to everyone who has contributed their time, expertise and support.

The good news is that this is only the beginning. A number of additional improvement projects are currently being planned, and we look forward to continuing to enhance our facilities, public spaces and village environment in the months ahead.

Together, through community effort, volunteerism and partnership, we are creating a cleaner, safer and more welcoming Effin for everyone.

📢 Big Changes Underway at Canon Hayes Memorial Hall! 📢

There's a hive of activity at the hall at the moment as work continues on creating a dedicated storage area for chairs, tables and other equipment used throughout the year.

This project has been made possible through grant funding from Limerick City and County Council, and we are delighted to see another improvement taking shape that will help us make better use of our facilities and keep the hall organised for future events.

As the builders cleared out the old storage space today, they uncovered some fascinating pieces of hall history that had been forgotten for decades!

Among the treasures discovered were: 🎟️ Original tickets from the Canon Hayes Memorial Hall Annual Christmas Variety Concert held on 10th January 1960 🍷 Several bottles of altar w**e tucked away and long forgotten 🎡 An old "Spin the Wheel" game, which undoubtedly brought plenty of excitement and entertainment to past generations

These unexpected finds are a wonderful reminder of the rich history of the hall and the many community events, concerts and gatherings that have taken place here over the years.

It's amazing to think that while we're investing in the future of the hall, we're also uncovering pieces of its past.

A sincere thank you to Limerick City and County Council for their support and to everyone involved in the ongoing works.

The Parish Pumps of Effin: A Symbol of Community, Childhood and Belonging
For those of us who grew up in Effin in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the parish pump beside Donovan's Shop, now Davy's Bar, was much more than a source of water. It was a focal point of community life and the centre of our childhood world.
The pump stood in a field beside Davy Barrett's house. To many, it may have seemed like an ordinary field, but to the local children it was our playground, our meeting place and indeed the centre of our universe. Long before organised sports facilities became commonplace, this field rang with the sounds of hurling, soccer and even the occasional attempt at rugby. Boys and girls gathered there daily, forming friendships and creating memories that have lasted a lifetime.
The parish pump was an essential part of those carefree days. After hours spent playing games, we would make our way to the pump for a drink of cool, refreshing water. The younger children, often too small to join in the matches, still had an important role to play. They retrieved balls that had wandered into hedges and ditches and proudly carried water from the pump to the older players. Everyone belonged and everyone was included.
The pump also served the wider community in many practical ways. Farmers returning from the creamery regularly stopped to wash their milk churns, making it a familiar meeting point where neighbours exchanged news and stories. During times of water shortages, families often relied on the pump and well for their household water supply. Drawing water from the well was simply part of life, and many local people will remember carrying buckets home when water was scarce. In this way, the pump was not only a place of recreation and social connection but also an important resource in everyday parish life.
Just a short distance away was Donovan's Shop, where a few pennies could buy a bag of sweets or an ice cream. These simple pleasures remain among the fondest memories of growing up in Effin.
Sadly, the original pump was stolen in the late 1990s and was never replaced. With its loss, a small but significant piece of our local heritage disappeared. Yet the friendships, experiences and stories associated with it have endured.
As someone who spent many happy hours in that field, I felt it was important to commemorate the parish pump and the special place it held in the lives of so many local families. I wanted to create a lasting reminder of those childhood days and of the community spirit that surrounded the pump. Thanks to Mike Looby for his help and reusing old timber And cast iron pump head to make a replica pump
The replica pump now standing on the site is a tribute to those times and to a generation who gathered there to play, socialise and enjoy the simple pleasures of rural life.
A special word of thanks is due to Pa Crean, who made the bracket for the structure and expertly fitted it in place. Thanks also to Davy's Bar for generously sponsoring the flowers and materials.
While this project commemorates the pump beside the old Donovan's Shop, now Davy's Bar, it also serves as a reminder of the important role parish pumps played throughout the Parish of Effin. Pumps in Garriencoona, Brickfield, Legane, beside the Church, Thomastown Cross and Guarrankeagh were once gathering places where neighbours met, exchanged news, offered help and strengthened the bonds of community. Long before mobile phones, social media and instant communication, the parish pump was where people connected and maintained the social fabric of rural life.
Each of these pumps holds its own unique history and a special place in the memories of local families. It is hoped that over the coming year some of these historic parish pumps can also be restored and preserved, allowing future generations to appreciate this important part of our heritage.
The parish pumps of Effin once provided fresh water to our communities. Today, they provide something equally valuable: a connection to our past and a reminder of the people and places that shaped parish life.
I would encourage anyone who has memories, stories or photographs of the parish pumps of Effin to share them. Every memory, no matter how small, helps preserve an important part of our local history and ensures that these stories can be passed on to future generations.

Community Garden in Hall is thriving.
If anyone wanted to pick a few snow pea pods to snack on feel free. They are amazing. Some have gotten quite big good for seed saving. Also beets seem to be doing well. You can take a few leaves like a chard to cook up no more than 10% of a plant. No zucchini’s yet. Maybe in a week or two the sunflowers will bloom.
