Hugh is the schoolmaster of the hedge school in Baile Beag, where Greek, Latin and Irish are taught to the local children.

A man deeply rooted in his language, his learning and the traditions of his community, Hugh finds himself facing a world that is beginning to change around him.

As the English surveyors arrive and the familiar place names of Baile Beag are translated and anglicised, Hugh must consider what these changes mean for the community he has spent his life teaching.

Ahead of our production of 'Translations' by Brian Friel, (where tickets went on sale at midday today 🎭) Dungarvan Dramatic Club are delighted to announce the first event to kick off our 85th celebrations.

From Tuesday 3rd November, for two weeks in the lead up to Opening Night, Dungarvan Dramatic Club will be exhibiting a photographic collection that will give a snapshot of our 85 year history.

So please come along to Dungarvan Library anytime between Tuesday November 3rd and Saturday November 14th, 2026 and enjoy an engaging and nostalgic exhibition where we will mark our proud tradition of fostering and developing drama by the production of plays while also looking forward to the next 85 years.

But what happens when the names of your places are changed?

Owen is the son of the hedge schoolmaster in Baile Beag.
He works with the English surveyors, helping to translate the Irish place names they encounter as they map the area.
Caught between the community he comes from and the changes taking place around him, Owen finds himself in a difficult position when his "friends”, the Sappers become his enemies as they threaten to wreak havoc on his family, friends and neighbours.

What is Translations about?
Set in a hedge school in Baile Beag, a small Irish-speaking town in 1833.
The story begins as the community finds itself facing a changing world. English surveyors arrive to map the land, with the help of some local people, and the familiar Irish place names are translated and anglicised.
When the hedge schoolmaster’s son becomes involved with the surveyors, Translations explores what happens when language, culture and identity begin to collide.
At times funny, at times moving, and always thought-provoking, the play shows how language can connect people and communities but can also divide them.
