EPSO, is a contemporary creative arts project exploring language culture through type sets and creative expression. It will animate our interpretation of the English language and phrases we use in our everyday lives - highlighting this feature of our unique culture utilising the tangible medium of art together with imagination.

This cultural, creative arts project will help elevate the creation of a public, outdoor archive – a repository of local dialect and identity using the most powerful modern communication method which is Public Art!

EPSO will reveal the unique relationship the people of Dundalk have with the English language, it is synonymous with our local culture and identity. The phrases we habitually use are a distinct characteristic of our specific location, they are a more intimate and intangible component of our cultural identity and in particular our locality.

Dundalk’s traditional sayings are an important part of our cultural diversity, many of which we have inherited from past generations, and in social and linguistic terms should be celebrated and preserved.

This phrase has its origins in football but is now synonymous worldwide and is instantly identifiable and a clear Dundalk phrase. It is always used in a very positive manner and evokes pride in the town we come from. No matter where you go in the world if you hear someone saying “C’mon de Town”, you identify an affiliation straight away.

Used after a sentence. This short phrase can be dropped in at will.

Example: 'Did you see the new Brigid of Faughart mural, its deadly, “so it is'

Can also be used in the past tense – “So it was” or “So I did”

Example: It was lashing out of the heavens and I got soaked, “so I did”

While not entirely sure of the veracity of a given statement, this phrase is usually dropped in to express one's uncertainty at the said statement.

The project will run from September 15thuntil October 31st, 2020 and we will be employing some of Ireland’s very best typeset and mural artists to express this project through creative exploration and type fonts. Much like SEEK Urban Arts Festival, we will be using the Town Centre as our artistic canvas, with the inclusion of Shopfront shutters, which by their very nature have a negative impact on the area due to the imposing presence they have and why they are here.
