JOHN BEHAN RHA | PAST AND PRESENT

Solomon Fine Art is delighted to host an exhibition of new works by one of Ireland’s most celebrated living sculptors, John Behan.

In this exhibition of recent bronze sculpture, Behan continues to observe and explore themes of emigration and the displacement of people through the lens of Irish history, mythology and literature. Alongside scenes and imagery which reflect the plight of present-day refugees and victims of war, Behan has also created new iterations of his now-iconic famine ships and oar boats representing Ireland’s history of migration. The exhibition will also include several of the artist’s signature bulls among a range of mythologised beasts and birds inspired by Irish history and literature.

Some snapshots of our Summer Group Show opening night which took place two weeks ago.

Held as part of Dublin by Dusk’s ‘Last Thursday’ initiative, the evening was a huge success, featuring singing from the Hummingbirds and delicious ice cream, generously sponsored by Emerald Irish Ice Cream. A big thank you to everyone who came by.

SUMMER GROUP EXHIBITION ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Julie Cusack

Julie studied Visual Education in the Waterford Institute of Technology and subsequently received a National Diploma in Art & Design from the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology in 2003. Now living and working in Kilkenny, she has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland including at the Kilkenny Arts Festival, Eigse, Carlow and the Royal Hibernian Academy.

Julie’s abstracted landscapes are vibrant, layered and have always been rooted in drawing. Working primarily on paper and board she combines paint with drawn elements as drawing for her is not only a way to represent object or place but is also a way to engage in the intuitive physicality of making marks on a surface.

Julie Cusack’s work is represented in the OPW State Art Collection and in private collections in the UK, US, New Zealand and Portugal. She joined the Solomon Gallery stable in 2014.

SUMMER GROUP EXHIBITION ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Margo Banks

Born in 1951 and living once again in her childhood home in Clontarf with sweeping views of Dublin Bay, Margo Banks was an artistically precocious child and began oil painting classes at 13 years of age. She moved to Spain where she met her late husband Miguel with whom she had three sons. Fifteen years later she returned to Dublin and Clontarf with her three young children and worked hard at developing her art practice.

Margo initially worked in ceramics; building a kiln in her garage and from there moved into bronze sculpture, before returning to drawing and painting. With each medium, she enjoyed early success, and has shown for many years at the Royal Hibernian Academy and Royal Ulster Academy; amongst many solo shows.

Margo’s work now sits in private collections across Ireland, the UK and Holland, as well as the Office of Public Works, Enterprise Ireland and Cill Rialaig Arts Centre. She has shown her lively charcoal, chalk and crayon animal drawings very successfully with the Solomon Gallery since 2016.
