Another amazing day of learning at Masamba Central yesterday! We were honoured to welcome Master Drummer and Culture Bearer and Educator Alexandre Garnizé back to our rehearsal room for the second time.
Over five hours of intensive playing, we covered several crucial rhythms from the Afro Brazilian Tradition, accompanied by songs, historical context, and a few laughs along the way.
We were joined for this workshop by members of Maracatu Ilha Brilhante (nationwide), Bloco Garman (Wexford), Another Planet Samba (Cloughjordan), Samba Wave (Galway), and a number of independent musicians and ethnomusicologists, so the blisters and sore muscles will be spread around the country today!
Many thanks to Maracatu Ireland for doing the heavy lifting in bringing Alexandre Garnizé to our shores and to the 2026 Small Scale Local Festivals and Summer Schools Scheme for part funding the event.

Best of luck and a safe event to all our friends and colleagues participating in the Notting Hill Carnival main parade today! We know that a contingent from Beat Carnival are joining Mandinga Arts for the event, and of course our buddies in the London School of Samba and Baque de Axé will be putting on great shows as always!
Here we are with the LSS back in 1999(?) - they very kindly chose a leprechaun theme to make us feel at home;-)

Heads-up for a lovely event we are participating in next week at the Irish Film Institute. Ahead of a screening of a new Brazilian animation 'Papaya', we will be delivering a demonstration and workshop on Brazilian percussion. There will also be a mural created on the day, and most importantly CAKE!
