What a concert by the Béla Fleck, Edmar Castañeda, Antonio Sánchez Trio (BEATrio) last night!

It was an honour and a privilege to bring three great musicians of this calibre to Ireland and the National Concert Hall for Waltons New School of Music's World Masters Series. Thank you to Béla, Edmar and Antonio for introducing us to your gorgeous soundscapes, as well as to our audience, who couldn't have been more receptive and enthusiastic (two standing ovations!), to their tour manager Sam Staton, and to the National Concert Hall stage and front of house teams for their fine work.

SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR

After their sold-out concerts for Waltons New School of Music's World Masters Series in 2008 and 2013, we are delighted to welcome back the glorious Soweto Gospel Choir for their only performance in Ireland in 2024. This is our first World Masters concert since 2019, and we’re very happy to have this great concert series – which has been running since 2003 – back again.

RIP Toumani Diabaté (1965-2024)

We are saddened at the death of the great kora player Toumani Diabaté on July 19th. He was not only one of the world’s finest musicians but a wonderful man as well. We were so privileged to bring him, along with his son Sidiki, to perform at the National Concert Hall in June 2014 for the World Masters Series. An unforgettable concert.

THE FUTURE OF RTÉ LYRIC FM

Music Network has shared with us a letter expressing their deep concern about RTÉ possibly axing RTÉ lyric fm for budgetary reasons. RTÉ lyric fm has been a vital supporter of the Waltons World Masters Series since it began in 2003, and we share their concern.

Here's what Music Network wrote:

‘Since the station first invigorated our airwaves more than 20 years ago, RTÉ lyric fm has established itself at the very heart of music and culture in Ireland. It plays a critical role in our national public service broadcasting, and its closure would result in a chasm that would irreparably weaken Ireland’s cultural landscape.

The station’s rich and varied programming incorporates the very best of orchestral, jazz, opera, contemporary, traditional, world and film music. With more than a quarter of a million weekly listeners it presents a unique and distinctive offering on Irish radio that brings enjoyment and inspiration to many.

RTÉ lyric fm operates on a minimal investment relative to the wealth of its output. Closing it is not the solution – any financial gains made would be fleeting and insignificant, but the loss felt would be long lasting and severe.’
