Stepping Stones is a pilot theatre making program created and led by Freshly Ground in partnership with The Civic as part of their ongoing education initiative, supporting creative learning across schools in South Dublin ⭐️

Now in its second year, Stepping Stones engaged with 6th class and 1st year students to introduce theatre as a collaborative artform. In this process centred program, students were offered multiple entry points into theatre-making. Participants explored directing, performance, writing, devising and design, discovering ways to stage their stories together and develop as young artists. The program took the form of a series of facilitated school based workshops followed by a gathering and sharing of works in progress in The Civic studio 🎭

We ❤️ Cardboard!!

A big part of our work is sustainability. Many of our projects we create props, set pieces, puppets and masks using cardboard!

We are so inspired by the art of at Cardboard Adventures who we worked with recently on a project! More to follow 😜❤️

Great morning at having conversations with students from Coláiste de Híde about Creative Careers!

We think it’s so important for students to have to more opportunities to have face to face discussions with professional creatives to learn more about pathways into the arts!

Thanks for having us as part of this research workshop ⭐️

We loved having the opportunity to work with artist Kelvin Akpaloo! These workshops explored how to use art as a tool for activism.

Kelvin is the creative director of KAMM Artistic Europe-a diverse Spanish theatre Association based in Madrid that works with young people from minority backgrounds and Madrid community. They use performing arts and creative media as a tool to empower, tackle social issues and raise awareness to open dialogue with a goal of building an inclusive and diverse community.

From Jan-May, we had Transition Year student Kayla Kavanagh on work experience placement with us every Monday. We absolutely loved having her and she contributed so much to our projects over the last few months and we can’t wait to see what she does next!⭐️❤️

As a company one of our aims is to support emerging artists develop their practice and share pathways to follow a creative career.

Here’s just some of what she got up to on placement:

“During my work experience with Freshly Ground, I did various types of work including facilitating, workshop planning, assistant stage managing and prop making!

I worked on a project called Stepping Stones with first year students where we helped the students create their own short play. During this programme, I got to see the project get on its feet and in motion and what goes into a project, what’s needed and how to facilitate a workshop.

I also helped out at a lecture at TUD Tallaght that Freshly Ground was giving to college students who wanted to work with younger kids. During this lecture, Freshly showcased a piece of their work called Feathered Friends which I helped stage manage and not only did the college students learn a lot, I did too.

I did a variety of other jobs including being an assistant stage manager at the Act Up Festival and other shows and I got a proper insight of what it’s like to be an artist and facilitator and the work that goes into every project and workshop

Overall, my time at Freshly Ground was amazing! I learned so much and I will definitely carry this knowledge with me through my career as an aspiring artist!!”

We are makers!

One the aims of Roots is to support young artists to develop their skills not only as performers but as theatre makers. In our workshops we practice many methods of devising, our members have also designed and made set pieces, props and costumes for their shows, they have written original scripts, songs!

Together we learn about all wider picture of developing new work!
