Goethe Choir presents a world premiere cantata celebrating the historic meeting of Queen Elizabeth I and Grace O'Malley.
1593 saw the meeting of Queen Elizabeth I of England and Grace O'Malley, the so-called pirate Queen of Ireland.
They were the most powerful women in the British Isles at the time. Both were political and military leaders. Although their politics were different, their personalities may have been quite similar. After all, they were both women with the strength,
courage, and charisma to rule in a world of men.

Choir member Werner Blau's 'A Greenwich Parley' combines classical Elizabethan choral music by such composers as William Byrd and Ellis Gibbons (amongst others) with traditional Irish pieces and choral arrangements of two pieces from 'Granuaile' by Shaun Davey. It also includes a professionally narrated description of both queens' lives and their meeting in Greenwich in 1539, during which Latin was the common language. Instrumental accompaniment will be by Uilleann Pipes, Whistle and Harp.
The concert will also feature new works by contemporary Irish composers Ciara McElholm, Jean AC Finch, Mary Kelly and Brian McIvor.
Join us in either Galway, Westport or Dublin for this musical celebration two iconic women.

We certainly know that it's good for your mental health!

For this year's First Fortnight festival, socially engaged composer, musical director, and musician Norah Walsh has composed a choral piece inspired by the vision and aims of First Fortnight; to end the stigma associated with mental ill health.
