Lake Burst is the title of a new exhibition by Irish Trinidadian interdisciplinary artist Maïa Nunes opening at the RHA this Friday.

It consists of a single body of artistic works made in response to a pair of glacial lakes, Lough Bré, at the top of the Glencree Valley. Made over the course of five years, the exhibition showcases Nunes’ expansive and transdisciplinary approach to artistic practice, embracing film, live performance, textile, installation, stone sculpture, music and sound.

As part of this exhibition, Nunes will launch her highly anticipated 8-track vinyl concept album, titled Lake Burst. The installation will become a stage as she performs her Lake Burst album live with a full band of stellar musicians at the RHA – further information to follow.

Opening this Friday, Una Sealy's ' Time Lines: Selected Works 2016 - 2026 is deeply rooted in place, with a particular focus on North Dublin – from the northern Liffey docks to the coastal village of Howth.

Sealy is an elected full Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts. She has held eleven solo exhibitions to date, and her work has been selected for many curated shows in Ireland and abroad. She has recently been commissioned to paint major portraits for public collections in Waterford County Council, Dublin City University and National University of Ireland, Galway.

In his ongoing look back at the 196th RHA Annual Exhibition in association with McCann FitzGerald, the Sunday Independent’s Niall MacMonagle looked at the work of Nicole Covurluian and Lauryn Creamer Nwadike, two artists who’ve known each other since school days in Bray, Co. Wicklow:

‘Today, although Covurluian and Creamer Nwadike both have their solo practice, late last year they decided to collaborate. ‘I know why the caged bird sings’ is, says Covurluian, "part of a series called Everybody Rides the Carousel, which explores our psychological experience of adolescence and womanhood in the landscape of our hometown" adding that their work together is about "shared experience, identity and trying on different identities, reflecting the experience of heritage and landscape".

‘The painting's title, ‘I know why the caged bird sings’, is a line Maya Angelou borrowed from Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem Sympathy, in turn borrowed by these young artists for their powerful double act. The piece won the Contemporary Irish Art Society Award at this year's RHA Annual Exhibition.’

Cnuasach, a group exhibition curated by Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh PRHA, brings together twenty-one artists in a dialogue between established and emerging artists.

Featuring eleven Members of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts alongside ten invited artists, the exhibition creates a space for exchange and discovery across generations, practices and perspectives.

The exhibition presents four recurring themes: landscape, portraiture, grids and abstraction. While distinct in their histories and visual languages, these subjects provide a framework through which the artists explore questions of perception, structure, space, memory and approaches to image-making.

Exhibiting artists include: Tinka Bechert; John Bensons; George Bolster; Joanne Boyle; Elaine Byrne ARHA; Amanda Coogan; Dorothy Cross RHA; Martin Gale RHA; Jason Gubbiotti; Pat Harris RHA; Eithne Jordan RHA; Alice Maher RHA; Elva Mulchrone; Abigail O’Brien PPRHA; Mick O’Dea PPRHA; Geraldine O’Neill RHA; Armelle Skatulski; Tamsin Snow, Charles Tyrrell RHA and Michael Wolf.

Twist and Shout, an exhibition of new artworks by Róisín Lewis, opens at the Municipal Gallery, DLR LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire this Sunday, with a preview from 2-4pm on Saturday afternoon.

The works in this exhibition curated by Jonathan Carroll, evolve from Lewis's bicycle journeys through the Irish landscape. During the summer, she records her observations of wildflowers and grasses while cycling through coastal landscapes, naming each species aloud as she passes.

Working with transparent watercolours, she recreated her experience of light and colour on backroads filled with fuchsia, montbretia, loosestrife, willowherb and meadowsweet.

Róisín has also been exploring textiles made from montbretia, dandelion and bindweed fibres using traditional techniques of twisting, looping and weaving. These slow, repetitive processes mirror the rhythms of the body moving through the landscape. Her drawing process is inspired by experiments with circular looped structures.

Róisín has just completed her year as an RHA Studios Artist in Residence.

IPUT Living Canvas at IMMA is currently showing John Beattie’s film An Artist, The Studio, and all the rest... 2006 - 2012. The RHA was central to making this work with several Academy Members, including Mick O'Dea, Des McMahon, Carey Clarke, Stephen McKenna, and Tom Ryan (all former RHA Presidents, PPRHA), featuring in the film.

A panel discussion on making creative spaces takes place tomorrow at 6pm, 1 Sept, at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilminham, Dublin 8, with Mary Cremin, Niall Gaffney, Ruth Lyons, and Alan Gilsenan, moderated by Gemma Tipton. See imma.ie to reserve a free space.

The 196th RHA Annual Exhibition in association with McCann FitzGerald may be over but the Sunday Independent’s Niall MacMonagle is continuing to write about art that caught his eye this year. Last weekend he interviewed artist Emma Stroude:

‘Enough (After Rego), which exhibited at this year's RHA Annual Exhibition. is based on a 1995 pastel work by British-Portuguese artist Paula Rego called Two Women Being Stoned. "In Rego's piece, two women crouch submissivelv with arms outstretched. One woman is bent double, her right hand protects her head. Another woman crouches submissivelv and looks towards their aggressor. It is a surrender, but the woman does not appear weak.

‘The Rego painting has been described as a universal picture of violence against women. Rego's work prompted Stroude to question "how far we (all genders) have come and how far we still have to go", She decided "to extend the pose to three figures, two protecting themselves and one appealing to the aggressor Unlike Rego's work, the two sheltering figures make direct eye contact with the viewer. to engage them in the situation and ask for their reflection."’

The menu is designed by Chef Cathal Leonard, formerly head chef at Chapter One and Chef-Patron of the award-winning Potager in Skerries. Margadh has had wonderful reviews this year, voted one of Ireland's 100 great places to eat for summer 2026 by the Irish Times and the best Sunday lunch in Dublin by the Sunday Times.

Buildings from a Novel consists primarily of a series of sculptures that were made while artist and writer Adrian Duncan was writing his recently published novel A Thought Without Collision (Tuskar Rock Press). These sculptures, which resemble fictional buildings imagined in the novel, belong to points in an imaginary terrain.

The video work shown alongside the sculptures, also titled Buildings from a Novel shows a conversation between two characters from this novel as they discuss the destiny of the house they are standing in. This conversation takes place as they stand over a model of this house, a model that also appears as a sculpture in this show.
