Art and pottery classes for kids in Tallaght, Clondalkin & Maynooth. Our classes and summer camps are great fun. All ages and abilities catered for.

Doodle Box Saturday art classes in Rua Red are from 11am to 12pm, 12.15pm to 1.15pm for children aged 5-8 years old,1.45pm - 3pm for children aged 9 - 12 years old. Thursday classes are from 3.30pm - 4.30pm for 5 - 8 years old, 5-6.15pm for children 9 to 12 years old. Classes in the Community Space in Maynooth are on Fridays. 2.15pm-3.15pm for Junior and Senior Infants, 3.15pm-4.15pm for 1st, 2nd

& 3rd classes, 4.15pm-5.15pm for 4th, 5th & 6th classes. Classes in North Bay ETNS are for students of the school and are held on Wednesdays, after school. There is a diverse variety of themes, materials and techniques explored. We encourage the children to develop their own self expression through exploration with media in two and three dimensions. Each term, every child gets to make a pottery piece, fired to earthenware temperatures.

Drawing, painting printmaking, fired clay, construction, collage, mixed media, and sometimes materials that are a little harder to categorise.
Part of learning to think like an artist is discovering just how many different ways there are to make art.
Some children fall in love with drawing. Others discover clay, printing, paint or construction. And sometimes the thing they love most is something that they hadn't tried before.
That's why variety has always been such an important part of the Doodle Box experience.

Patch has been my muse for many pieces of art and today he inspired a lino print.
Last term the Doodle Bots asked to try lino printing in this upcoming term. That's what I spent today experimenting with.
I loved the whole process - from the initial observational drawings, to developing the design, to carving with tools that I bought in the 1990's and that are still going strong!
Of course, they're was a little blip when I inadvertently sliced through one of Patch's whiskers... but I adjusted the design and kept going.
All the way through to making some lovely prints of the very "best boy". ❤️
This is what happens when I'm planning a Doodle Box class. I know what I want my students to learn, and I can plan how I'm going to delivery that - but I can never plan or know what they're going to make.
And nor would I want to.

The magic happens when the children stop looking to me for constant validation.
It's the moment they realise that the skills they've learned, together with their own ideas, are enough.
They begin to trust themselves.
They become confident enough to try something new, knowing that if they need support, I'll be there to guide them.
This is when they begin to think like an artist.

On Monday I shared why learning art skills enables creative freedom.
Today, I wanted to show you what that looks like.
These photographs span different ages, different materials and different stages of learning. From curious experimentation to confident, technically skilled work, every child is building the same thing: a creative toolkit that they can draw on to express their own ideas.
In Doodle Box, we don't teach art skills so that every child's work looks the same.
We teach art skills so that every child has the same opportunity to develop their own creative voice.
Because when children understand how and
why something works, they find the freedom to use it in their own way.

If we want children to think like artists and develop their own ideas, why spend so much time teaching art skills?
Because confidence doesn't grow from guessing, it grows from understanding.
When children learn artistic principles, they gain more than technical skills. They gain more ways to solve problems, make creative decisions and express their own ideas with confidence.
In Doodle Box we don't teach art skills so that every child's work looks the same. We teach art skills so that every child has the same opportunity to develop their own creative voice.

This week I've been taking you behind the scenes as I prepare for our new term in Doodle Box.
Today, I spent time developing one project for the Doodle Bugs.
On the surface, it's a painting lesson about creating depth-exploring how artists use size and colour to make a flat painting feel three-dimensional.
But there's another lesson woven into it too.
I always make more than one example. Not so that the children can choose which one to copy, but so they can see that there's never just one solution to an artistic problem.
They'll all be learning the same artistic principles, but each child will use those ideas to create a painting that's entirely their own.
Because when children understand why a technique works, they find the freedom to use it in their own way.
This is how we teach children to think like artists.

Today, I was lucky enough to be joined by other creatives who bring many different and exciting ideas to the table. The incredible And a debut by a long term Doodle Box student who will be doing her TY work experience with me this year.
It was a beautiful collaboration today and we're all excited about the term ahead.

This week Doodle Box is preparing for the new term starting in September.
Every new term begins with questions, experimentation and plenty of planning.
I'm not just deciding what we'll make. I'm thinking about what I want the children to experience, what I hope they'll discover for themselves, and how each project can help them grow in confidence as young artists.
Over the next few weeks I'll keep taking you behind the scenes and sharing why we mature the choices that we do.

The Doodle Bag was never designed simply to carry art supplies.
Every sketch pad, pencil and paintbrush has a purpose.
Because in Doodle Box, we're not just teaching children to how to think like artists. We're helping them to value their tools, care for the things that they use and grow in confidence along the way.
Sometimes the biggest lessons begin with the simplest idea.
