Featured Artists: Cellophonics

Champions of all things cello, Christopher Allan, Michael Atkinson, Adrian Bradbury and Ben Rogerson make up the cello quartet Cellophonics. Their performances brim with warmth and sparkle with virtuosity, bringing to life the contrasting characteristics of the cello. Featuring Irish composer Ailbhe McDonagh’s - Cellango

Cellophonics was born when four like-minded cellists from different strands of the music profession got together for an evening to remind themselves why they do what they do in the first place. Food and wine were involved, a lot of laughter, and a gargantuan pile of cello quartets. They enjoyed it so much that they decided it would be fun to do it more often. Well why not?Since then they have enjoyed playing concerts together at festivals throughout the UK. Firm believers that music can be enjoyed by everyone, the Cellophonics have commissioned new works and arrangements by Guy Barker, Libby Croad and Bill Thorp.

Featured Artists: Kitty Maguire

Passionate about movement from an early age, Kitty commenced training as a Ballet dancer at five years old. Attending ballet schools in Dublin and Bangor she then won a scholarship at sixteen to the prestigious Bird college in Kent where she completed a diploma in dance and musical theatre.

She then returned to Ireland to teach dance and run summer schools for children while continuing her training as a personal trainer and fitness instructor at the National Training Centre in Dublin. Constantly pushing her body to the limit, Kitty realised she needed to broaden her studies to embark on a more therapeutic and holistic practice.

Beginning by studying and teaching Pilates, Kitty found herself drawn to the world of Yoga, undertaking her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Samadhi in Dublin. She has since attended workshops in India, Bali, New York and the UK. Kitty’s classes are of a slow flow nature with a focus on technique, calming and slowing down the nervous system. She encourages individuality, expression and personal growth through a dynamic practice in a light and uplifting environment.

Join Kitty for soothing Yin Yoga with cellos - for the first time a group of Spike cellists will create music for the celebrated Yocella class with Kitty Maguire through drones, improvisations and especially arranged alternative classics.

Spike Alternative Cello Festival has been made possible thanks to The Arts Council of Ireland, with the young people’s events running in partnership with The Ark.
