🖤Valentine's clay-relief🖤

Who wouldn't love one of these on Valentine's day?!
After we rolled and flattened our clay, I asked the children to think of ideas for Valentine's day... we discussed a few obvious themes but each chose for themselves... Flowers & hearts were the obvious favourites but there were a few dog bones & teddy bears too!
All were different... Some wanted a heart-shaped tile, so I assisted by scoring lines for them to cut away the excess.
For some of the children, this was a first experience with clay... After a couple of early requests to wash hands & initial reluctance from some... They were soon smothered in wet clay and loving the sensory experience! What's not to love? Besides the cleanup! This beauty was made by a very focused 5 year boy😍

Getting ready for Valentine's Day with clay this week...
The children loved getting their hands wet & dirty as they delved into clay, exploring a new technique- clay coil-pot building.
Most of my students are aged between 4 & 7, so I really worried that this project might be a little ambitious!
But.... a hush came over the class as they focused their energy on rolling, cutting, pinching, scratching & attaching their coils, to build the most amazing heart shaped pots 🙌

Papier mache Carnival Masks
These were made over two sessions with different age groups...
The littlist ones used just: cardboard bases, cardboard shapes, paint, glue and collage parts, to make a face
(inspired by )
The older kids started with the same idea but with the option of building up 3D features using recycled packaging: egg cartons, masking tape & cotton wool.. Then covered with papier mache
They finished by painting and embellishing (there were possibly a few too many options here🙈) to create these stunning masks!

Thumb-pot clay lanterns. All began with the same process; learning how to work clay with our hands & tools, but all finished in very individual ways! Can't wait to see them dried, finished & lighting next week 🎃

Some fabulous work from the new crew! Using mirrors to observe their features, the children experimented with water colour paints... they mixed colours & added layers using different techniques - They finished with some squeezy paints on top, which I think it's safe to say they LOVED!💙 @ Dublin, Ireland

We took inspiration from the story 'The artist who painted a Blue Horse', and discussed how as artists, we can paint anything any colour we wish! A favourite starting point to promote this concept!
