The Complex is situated on Arran Street East and Mary's Abbey in the heart of the markets area of Dublin's north west inner city. The converted warehouse comprises a large, uniquely flexible theatre/performance space, 17 newly developed artist studios, a gallery space and rehearsal rooms. The Complex produces and co-produces theatre, events and exhibitions. The centre also operates as a space avai

lable for hire for arts programming, filming, rehearsals, set building, theatre, live events, conferences, cinema, streaming events, digital conferencing, car launches, immersive events, shows, special music performances, company events, innovative experiences, branded briefings and much more. Its unique warehouse aesthetic provides a blank canvas for arts of all kinds for both in-house and visiting artists. It is also home to several community engagement initiatives such as the Browbeating Project, High Hopes Choir and Complex Youth Theatre. Bright-eyed and eager, we examined a number of alternative outdoor sites at Lismore Castle Arts, guided by Paul McAree for Karl and Lucy to present their work. On the hottest day of the year, we navigated the unfamiliar landscape in severe heat while attempting to document it extensively, causing a communal delirium that has bound us to these specific zones in Lismore long after the visit.

Presented at Lismore Castle Arts as part of The Complex Off-Site visual arts programme 2026

Originally, I had invited Karl Burke and Lucy Gunning to develop an exhibition in conversation as part of The Complex visual art programme for 2026. Following the expiry of its lease and its unexpected closure, The Complex was bereft of a place for public exhibitions. A generous and timely invitation from Paul McAree provided an exciting alternative in Lismore Castle Arts in Co.Waterford. In order to showcase the exhibition within the desired timeframe, we had to consider spaces beyond what had been already programmed at Lismore buildings. This presented a challenging but productive shift in context, accompanied by some persistent questions such as:

How do we sustain artistic practice at a time when cultural space is becoming increasingly precarious and privatised?
Do we move outside?
Can we move outside?

❌ The Complex Off-Site ❌

A huge thank you to everyone who joined The Dust by Maïa Nunes with Brendan Jenkinson, commissioned by The Complex and presented at Kirkos.

For her live performance, Maïa distilled over a year of intensive research into an hour-long interplay of improvised movement and sound, rooted in the layered history of The Complex’s former site and its connection to St. Mary’s Abbey. Central to this research was a dialogue with archaeologist Edmond O’Donovan, which brought to light a remarkable carved Dundry stone fragment depicting a Monk in Prayer, discovered just metres from the gallery’s former entrance.

This fragment became a defining motif within Maïa’s work. In response, she undertook stone carving under the guidance of eighth-generation stonemason Killian O’Flaherty in his Wicklow workshop, engaging in the rigorous, repetitive act of carving as both material research and memorial gesture.

Thank you to Maïa, Brendan, Kirkos, Edmund, Killian, all collaborators, and to everyone who came along to witness The Dust.

The Dust marks the beginning of The Complex Off-Site visual arts programme for 2026. In addition to Maïa’s performance, the programme includes three further exhibitions presented across Ireland in partnership with collaborating organisations. Announcements regarding the forthcoming exhibitions will be made in the coming weeks.
