Hugh Lane Gallery is home to a collection of stained glass cartoons by Harry Clarke. Cartoons are full-size, preparatory drawings used as references or templates in the production of stained glass. Due to their large size, they are currently stored rolled in the collection. After conducting a condition report on the Harry Clarke cartoon, the conservator rolls the artwork and a long strip of acid-free tissue around a Tyveck® covered tube. The tube provides support for the artwork and protects it from damage while rolled. Art Express!

Come along to our Art Express! HLG art day on Thursday 6 August, 11am-1pm and 2-4pm at Seán O'Casey Community Centre, Eastwall, D3.

Try artist-led life drawing, printmaking and art workshops inspired by the wonderful architecture and beautiful nature there! We'll also have pop-up art talks exploring HLG collection.

Free, for all ages children, teens and adults.

Hugh Lane Gallery continues to collaborate with colleagues at other galleries and museums by lending works from our collection to exhibitions. We are delighted to support Daphne Wright’s exhibition, Memory and Presence, at Gerhard-Marcks-Haus, Bremen (Gerhard-Marcks-Haus), which opened yesterday. Pictured in front of Primate (2009) are Mirjam Verhey-Focke (), curator of the exhibition, Daphne Wright (), artist, Dr. Arie Hartog (), Director, Gerhard-Marcks-Haus, and Dr. Barbara Dawson, Director, Hugh Lane Gallery. The exhibition continues until 18 October.

Explore art and ideas, process and experimentation in this summer course for teens.

During this eight day summer camp for 14-17 year olds with artists Ashleigh Downey, An Gee Chan, Michelle Hall, Donald Talbot, Anca Danila, Megan Scott, Claire Crowley and assisted by Tori Boccarossa, we will experiment with lots of different techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking, art&fabric, how to make and use your own sketchbook to research ideas and more.

No experience necessary.

Many of our crates and T-frames are built in house by our art technician team. Packing works like this involves a collaborative effort between our conservation, art technician and curation team.

Conservation staff at Hugh Lane Gallery carefully rotate the inner piece of Maud Cotter's 'Matter of Fact'. The sculpture's core is made of delicate, honeycombed card adhered together with no protective structure. Overtime, it could lose its circular form due to gravity and compression. This is avoided through periodical rotation.

Our annual TY course for teens is a curated education programme that enables transition year students to gain an insight into the operations of the gallery and includes visits to other cultural locations around the city. The students also got to experience a fantastic visit to artist Anca Danila's own studio space as seen in this short film.

Come along to Art in the Making: A Transition Year Gallery Experience, a display of artwork curated by the students now on view at the Sean O'Casey Community Centre until 25 April 2026.
