The Irish Theatre Institute (ITI), in association with the The Tyrone Guthrie Centre Annaghmakerrig, is thrilled to announce the finalists for the prestigious 11th Phelim Donlon Playwright’s Bursary and Residency.

This year’s recipient is Dee Roycroft, with Ari Bhatti and Xnthony (Anthony Keigher) shortlisted for the award.

The recipient of the award will receive a €2,000 ITI Writers’ Bursary along with a two-week, fully resourced residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig. The two shortlisted artists will be awarded €500 in recognition of their exceptional work.

On making the announcement Niamh O’Donnell, Director of Irish Theatre Institute, said:

"Dee is an extraordinary artist whose work demonstrates a rare combination of theatrical instinct, imaginative ambition and deep commitment to storytelling and community. Across theatre, film and animation, she has already established herself as a powerful creative voice, and we are excited to support the development of her work through this award and residency at Annaghmakerrig.

We also want to recognise the exceptional talent, craft and originality of shortlisted artists Ari Bhatti and Xnthony (Anthony Keigher). The calibre of applications this year was incredibly high and reflects the strength of contemporary playwriting across the island.

The Phelim Donlon award continues to champion playwrights creating bold new work while honouring Phelim’s enduring commitment to artists and the development of theatre in Ireland."

ITI extends its gratitude to this year’s selection panel: CN Smith, Jody O’Neil and Kate Murphy, who reviewed applications from across the island and selected this year’s finalists.

Last month, we were delighted to welcome multidisciplinary artist Dafe Orugbo as guest speaker for our Six in the Attic & Virtual Attic online gathering.

Dafe spoke with participants about creating work as an independent artist, sharing insights into his creative practice and exploring alternative approaches to funding and sustaining artistic work.

Dafe Orugbo is an award-winning artist, board member of the Performing Arts Forum and internationally recognised musician as one half of hip-hop duo Tebi Rex, with whom he has toured Ireland, the UK and Europe.

His work centres audience experience and spans theatre, music and spoken word.

Selected for the Abbey Theatre’s prestigious Box of Tricks programme, Dafe’s script Am I The A**hole? premiered at the 2025 Dublin Fringe Festival with Fishamble, earning a sold-out run at Smock Alley. Earlier that year, his production Fin. – The Harbinger of Death premiered at Scene + Heard to sold-out audiences and strong critical response.

His music has featured in Normal People, Kin and national campaigns for brands including Dubliner Whiskey and Eir. Holding an MA in Critical & Creative Media, Dafe is also a writer, cultural commentator and mentor whose work explores themes from contemporary Ireland to mythology.
