100 years ago today, Paddy Duncan scored Ireland’s first ever goal at the 1924 Paris Olympics at the Stade Olympique de Colombes. Ireland was still finding its identity and a team of 16 players and coach travelled to Paris to represent the country, which was the first time an Irish team flew the tricolour flag at an international event 🇮🇪 We also wore St Patrick’s blue jerseys for that first competitive match.

We won that first game 1-0 against Bulgaria, with a goal from Paddy on the 75 minute mark. Paddy had sustained a bad injury shortly before the goal with fears he would have to exit the game. But coach Charlie Harris worked his “magic hands” on the injury and sent Paddy back into the game to score that historic first goal and secure a first win for the Irish Free State, as they were known at the time, in an international tournament that took place 6 years before the World Cup was established.

The FAIreland will be recognising the achievements of this 1924 football team with a commemoration in the Aviva Stadium on June 4th during the friendly game against Hungary.
