Eoin Mac Lochlainn, 'On the lookout', mixed media, 90x80cm, 2011. Part of the artist’s ‘Covid Eyes’ exhibition which started as an online project funded by the Arts Council of Ireland. The original paintings can now be seen at the Olivier Cornet Gallery until Sunday 25 October.

Eoin Mac Lochlainn's painting practice has been an ongoing response to stories in the media, be it climate change, homelessness or the Irish Diaspora.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, this strange period of isolation, social distancing and face masks, the artist became acutely aware of the special significance of human eyes.

"The eyes can tell so much about us, our fear, our frustrations, our compassion, but at the same time, the masks can hide so much. It can be more difficult to ascertain age, social standing, emotions etc.

"For my online project, I posted a new image of eyes every Tuesday over the summer of 2020.

The exhibition at the Olivier Cornet Gallery presents most of those paintings once again and it is hoped that visitors will appreciate the physicality of the works, the varying sizes and different media that were used in their creation.

This exploration of eyes ultimately points to the fact that we are not that different from each other, that we are all in this together and that we must rely on each other to get through this.

Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine."

Availability of the show: Tuesdays to Sundays at the gallery but please email us or call/text us to book a time that suits you. The version of the show, as presented by the artist in his blog posts, will also be available in our 3D Virtual Space (from 11 October onwards).

'Once Upon a Time in an Art Gallery' is a collaboration between the Olivier Cornet Gallery and art historian and storyteller Jean Ryan.

Jean Ryan is an Irish art historian who has a special interest in artworks which are influenced by literature. This approach enables her to introduce Irish artists from eras as diverse as the 18th century through to contemporary practitioners who are still influenced by stories of any genre. Through storytelling she has introduced people to artworks held in some of the best Irish museums, public galleries, arts centres, private collections and national institutions.

Olivier and Jean have combined these different backgrounds in art to create ‘Once Upon a Time in an Art Gallery' or 'OTG' as some supporters have already named it. This is a unique experience for people who are curious about Irish Art, its history, influences and the current trends in the Irish art scene.

Their aim is to create an environment of discovery and moments where the visitors encounter Irish artworks after listening to the story which influenced the artist.

For this online event taking place in the context of Eoin Mac Lochlainn’s COVID EYES exhibition at the Olivier Cornet Gallery, no booking is needed just join us on

Jean will tell you a story that influenced an art work in the gallery. As the story unfolds, you will be able to see selected works from the gallery, one of which was influenced by that story your are listening to. If there is an element of the story that resonates with you and creates an image, hold on to it and wait and see the moment the artist chose from the same story.

The story lasts 17 minutes, after which Jean will tell you about the background of the story and its author. After this, you will see the image of the work in question. From the next few minutes onwards jean will talk about the work before the artist joins her in conversation.

The event starts at 18:30 sharp and lasts 45 minutes approx.

Suitable for all ages (from 12+)
