It’s breeding season! Did you know gentoo penguins are the only penguins that build a raised nest? These pebbles aren’t decorative. They keep eggs off the cold ground and out of the wet. Sneachta (white and blue band) and Tom (green and white band) are hard at work. Come meet them at Oceanworld 🐧✨

It’s World Ocean Day, and this year we’re talking about the quiet ones🪼✨

Jellies have been drifting through the world’s oceans since before the dinosaurs, trees, or even fish. Without brains, hearts, or bones, they’ve survived all five of Earth’s mass extinctions and everything this planet has thrown at them.

And they’re still telling us something. These mesmerising creatures are one of the ocean’s most important indicators of health. When jellyfish blooms grow larger and more frequent, the ocean is under pressure, with warmer waters, overfishing, and ecosystems quietly tipping out of balance.

500 million years of surviving. The least we can do is pay attention. Skip the single use plastic, support sustainable seafood, get involved in a beach clean. Small actions can make a real difference 💙🌊

Go n-éirí libh to all students sitting their Leaving Cert and Junior Cert — and a special good luck from all of us at Oceanworld to our own Aoife, Abigail, Hazel and Tara. The penguins are rooting for you 🐧👍

It’s been a busy spring for our Humboldt penguins 🐧✨ Blue and Brie (parents of last year’s Wotsit), welcomed their newest chick on the 26th of March. Then, Ricotta and Lester (who brought us Monterey Jack) followed with theirs in May 🧀 Both pairs are brilliant parents and all four are doing wonderfully. Once the chicks have fledged, around 12-16 weeks, we’ll DNA test their feather follicles to find out whether these new additions are boys or girls, and then it’ll be your chance to name a penguin again ✨🐣

It’s been a busy month of hatching at Oceanworld, and this bank holiday we’re introducing some of our newest additions ✨👀

Today it was not one but two of the largest moths in the world, Attacus atlas. As if their wingspan wasn’t impressive enough, the markings on the wingtips mimic a cobra’s head in profile, enough to startle a hunting bird 🐍

Native to Asia, from India to Indonesia, these moths never feed as adults — every bit of energy they need for the rest of their short lives was stored during their time as a caterpillar 🐛 Flutter by during a Butterfly Q&A at 11am to learn more from our Aquarists.

Can you spot the masters of disguise? 🥸 Skates are flat bodied ambush predators, buried just beneath the sand, waiting for prey to wander past **leaquarium

Part one of Molly’s journey home - Two turtles, one mission, and a forklift or three 🐢

When our favourite turtle left Di**le she was joined by her travel buddy Frankie. Frankie is a juvenile loggerhead that was found washed up on a beach in Belmullet, Co. Mayo in November, and has been recuperating at Oceanworld until getting the all-clear to return back to the ocean.

Both girls were strong, healthy, and ready to start the long journey home. They flew from Dublin to Lisbon in a temperature-controlled cargo unit, where our friends at Zoomarine were waiting to pick them up.

Molly weighs 120kg and stretches to 1.2m — so getting her safely crated, loaded, and airborne was no small feat. It took careful planning, a brilliant crew, and more than one forklift. Her crate left Kerry with one last message: Go n-éirí leat, Molly.

Both turtles have settled in beautifully, being very active and exploring from the moment they arrived. Follow along for more updates soon 🐢 🌊
