Great idea for those of us needing a board game fix during the times ahead
While we wait
Okay knaves I get it, there's nothing like getting together with friends and gaming, it's the community part that makes it good. WEELLLLL tough s**t, we can't do that at the moment. Not forever just for now but in the mean time we need to be clever.
I spoke about Through the Ages a while back, until the restrictions are lifted I'm going to talk all about online gaming. A lot of you will be familiar with this, maybe a few are not or disagree with this type of witchcraft but that never stopped me talking in the past.
There are a number of platforms out there to allow you to play boardgames online. I'm going to talk about a few, first up is the granddaddy of online gaming VASSAL or more correctly the Vassal Engine.
http://www.vassalengine.org/
The Vassal engine is an environment that runs on Linux, Mac and Windows and allows you to run a variety of board games in the form of modules. Here's the good bit. Vassal is Free, the modules are free. Bad bit? You mostly have to enforce the rules yourself which you do have to do anyway with the cardboard version. The second badish thing is there's a bit of a learning curve on using the interface. It's not bad, far from it but it takes a little time to get your head around it. That's okay though, you have time.
Now once you're up and going and picked your weapon of choice and persuaded a buddy or five to do the same you can play a STACK of games against each others. There's currently 2000+ games there. Some are pretty amazing. I've played Twilight Struggle with gaming friends and it even enforced the rules itself. The interface is like a good conference call application with chat areas and a variety of tools. Interestingly a lot of games companies like GMT release modules themselves so they can test their game before they go intro production.
It's worth going and checking it out, it's also worth watching a few YouTube videos on how to operate it. Now the last good thing is it's not processor intensive so it will run on very low spec hardware.
Anyhoe, check it out, There's a LOT of game on there and it's really proper free. a good place to start
Huzzah!
