Focus Ireland was founded by Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy, who was involved in a research project into the lives of homeless women in Dublin. It was here that she realised the importance of involving people who are, or have been directly affected by homelessness, in the development of homelessness services.

In 1985, two years after the initial research, Focus Point – now Focus Ireland – opened its doors in Eustace Street, Dublin. The organisation provided street-work services to young people, along with advice, advocacy, information and help with finding a home; as well as a warm, welcoming place to meet and have a low-cost meal.

Since its foundation Focus Ireland has continued to grow, and its research and advocacy work ensures that the rights of people who are homeless remain on the political agenda. In addition to its Dublin projects, it now has services and housing projects across Ireland including in Waterford, Kilkenny, Cork, Sligo and Limerick.

Throughout the current pandemic Focus Ireland, here in Cork, has continued to deliver its broad range of services including advice and information, youth housing, housing first, longterm housing and resettlement.

Diabetes Ireland is the national charity dedicated to helping people with diabetes.

Serving people with diabetes since 1967, the organisation provides support, education and motivation to its community. Diabetes Ireland also raises public awareness of diabetes and its symptoms, and funds research into finding a cure for diabetes.

Each year, through their patient education and information services, Diabetes Ireland provides support to thousands of Irish people with diabetes and their families, when needed most.

You can find the full list of services provided by Diabetes Ireland, for individuals and families all over Ireland, here: https://www.diabetes.ie/about-us/our-work/

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Diabetes Ireland has stopped all group education and fundraising activities. This has virtually decimated their income.

You can help ensure they can keep their helpline and online information platforms open for service users by making a donation.

Togher Family Centre is a thriving community organisation on the south side of Cork City, which has been working for the people of Togher and the south side for the last 44 years.

Togher Family Centre provides services to children, families and adults in the heart of their own community. It has grown from one small pre-school to the largest provider of early years education in Cork City, serving more than 180 children between the ages of one to five years.

In addition to its focus on educating young children, the organisation is also home to a lively youth club serving 80 children, adult education classes, and social groups.

It also provides a range of support services for families who, for one reason or another, need support in getting through difficult times. These services include counselling; one-to-one support; and their child contact service, Grove Cottage.

The team at Togher Family Centre believes in an ethos of providing a future of opportunity for all, working each day to make that vision a reality.

While Togher Family Centre’s doors are closed, they are providing one-to-one support, via WhatsApp or Zoom, to people dealing with parenting challenges at this stressful time as well as supplying resources for at-home activities for children.

Those who need their services can call them on 0214316766.

In making the difficult decision to cancel our 2020 event, our charity partners have been uppermost in our thoughts.

Over the next few days, we will be dedicating our social media platforms to highlighting the incredible work of these organisations, beginning with Cork Cancer Care Centre.

Cork Cancer Care Centre was founded by Ann Dowley Spillane while on her own journey with cancer. Following her diagnosis, and whilst undergoing treatment, she became aware of the need to support fellow patients with ideas, advice and, most importantly, a shoulder to lean on.

In February 2011, Cork Cancer Care Centre – then known as The Girls Club – was created, built on an ethos of positive approach and positive encouragement.

Located at 26 St Paul’s Avenue, the centre’s premises is an official meeting point and ‘home away from home’ for all those touched by cancer, providing vital support to individuals and their families.

The centre offers free services in counselling or psychotherapy, as well as complimentary therapies including Reiki, Indian head, lymphatic drainage, reflexology and Shamanic healing.

Classes on art therapy, mindfulness, meditation and yoga are also available as well as the use of a drop-in day centre.

A Summer's Evening on the Quad was due to be one of the biggest fundraising events of 2020 for Cork Cancer Care Centre, and its cancellation is financially devastating for this much-loved organisation.

You can help ensure the doors of this self-funded charity will be open, when the current situation passes, by donating on their website www.corkcancercarecentre.ie/donate.

Thank you.

A message from the organising committee for A Summer’s Evening on the Quad:

"It is with great sadness that we announce that this year’s A Summer’s Evening on the Quad Concert at UCC will not take place, due to the current Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s concert, which was due to take place in July, was expected to raise €52,000 for our charity partners: Cork Cancer Care Centre, Diabetes Ireland, Focus Ireland, Sexual Violence Centre Cork and Togher Family Centre.

In making this difficult decision, these charity partners have been uppermost in our thoughts. The 2020 concert was due to be one of the biggest fundraising events for these organisations, who provide essential and life-enhancing services to the people of Cork.

If you are in a position to, please support them. You can find more information through their pages, below:

At this time, the dedicated members of the Band of An Garda Síochána have also put down their instruments and taken up duty in the Covid-19 effort, providing essential support and security across the country. We send our heartfelt good wishes to the band members serving our community at this time.

We also extend sincere thanks to all our sponsors and supporters, in particular EchoLive.ie, Cork's 96FM and The River Lee, who have been central to the success of the concert to date.

While Covid 19 has dimmed the lights on A Summer’s Evening on the Quad in 2020, we are already looking ahead to July 2021 and bringing the 15th concert to the beautiful Quad at UCC.

We will be planning an extra-special event, and look forward to welcoming our loyal patrons, supporters and friends to celebrate together again. Until then; stay safe, stay apart and look after each other."

We join the many voices paying tribute to beloved Corkman Niall Tóibín.

Niall was a friend of A Summer's Evening on the Quad and compered the first concert in 2006. His humour and goodwill set the tone for a wonderful evening and we are so grateful for his support in those early days.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
