Have you knit a set-in sleeve sweater?

My first sweater used a traditional set-in sleeve. You know the style, where you must try to seam that bell-curve cap into the armhole opening. It was not a pretty picture!

When I discovered that it could be knit seamlessly, it seemed too good to be true.

I was recently gifted a box of crocheted doughnuts from one of our Signature Tour knitters, and honestly… this is exactly the kind of thing I mean. 🍩

Bonus points for making us say, “Wait… really?”

Do you find yourself spending far too much time thinking about a tiny knitting detail?

Just me? I suspect I’m not alone!

Belt loops are one of those little details where how you knit them can make a difference to the finished garment. Here’s the method I like to use.

Is your pom-pom starting to droop?

This little hack keeps it secure while you’re wearing it but also makes it easy to remove when wash day arrives. How do you attach yours?

Be honest: how big is your “too small to throw away” yarn pile?

You know the one.

A couple of grams of yarn leftover from a shawl or sweater. Half a ball of your favourite colour or a growing stash of yarns you loved so much you couldn’t possibly get rid of the leftovers.

Carol’s free Helly Hat was made for exactly this sort of behaviour.

Find the pattern here: https://stolenstitches.com/products/helly

It’s a simple, satisfying way to use up your odds and ends while playing with helical stripes, so you can mix colours, learn a clever jogless technique and turn the stash into something you’ll actually wear.

Because if you’re anything like us, there’s always another bit of yarn waiting to be useful.

Tell us in the comments. We suspect there are some impressive contenders out there.

Do you use the schematic when you’re knitting a sweater?

Or is it one of those mysterious little diagrams you glance at... and then go straight back to the written instructions?

Because here’s the thing: your schematic is your roadmap to modifying your sweater.

Want longer sleeves? More ease? A different length?

Once you start reading it that way, you stop seeing a pattern as a set of rules and start seeing possibilities.

And that’s exactly the kind of sweater know-how we’ll be exploring in the Sweater Society.

We start tomorrow!

Someone's wearing a lovely jumper...

Me: Must inspect the construction.

Interesting shoulder...

Me: How did they do that?

Intricate stitch pattern...

Me: How could I work that into a design?

At this point, I don't think I look at knitwear anymore.

I analyse it.

If you had to choose just one, which are you knitting: Team Sweater or Team Vest?

And no, “both” is not an acceptable answer. 😉
