LAY OF THE LAND

LAY OF THE LAND Crowd-funded site responsive sculpture project by Kari Cahill + Hazel Mc Cague Lay of the Land is a crowd-funded project.

From the 19th September to the 2nd October six artists - Anna Wiley, Emily Robyn Archer, Hazel Mc Cague, Kari Cahill, Liliane Puthod & Margie Jean Lewis will engage with the landscape at Brow Head, Mizen Peninsula, West Cork. During the time spent on the tombolo headland we will develop and produce site responsive sculptural installations. Geography, locality, topography, heritage, community and h

istory will play a role in this artistic engagement; drawing from the local and national history of the peninsula, studying the relationship between the land masses and ocean, and integrating knowledge from the surrounding communities. Artistically our aim is to drive artists and the experience of art outwards, into the wilderness forging deeper connections with Ireland's natural landscape, resulting in a more dynamic work flow that will produce unique and informed sculptural artworks. It's an experiment to question how art in the great outdoors can stand alone as a valuable cultural activity.

Helena .d.ready ’s arts practice developed from a desire to create ‘real time’ experiences that encourage connection and contemplation. Sanctuary is a major theme in her work and she creates immersive ‘soft architecture’ inspired by sacred geometry, folk crafts and Zen design principles. The relationship between nature and technology features in her work and she’s interested in sustainability, biomimicry and self-organising-systems.
We’re handing over the reins to Helena for two weeks. Hope ye enjoy!

Katie Harris-MacLeod is a visual artist and photographer. She joined us last summer on Res 3 in Port, Donegal from the Isle of Mull, Scotland. Katie is now living in Australia and we’re really interested to see how her work has developed in these surroundings.
Katie’s work embodies a narrative journey of loss, abandonment and the continuous search for a space that is sacred, safe, the Mother/ the Father, her, woman, she; our innate (human) desire and need for protection. This narrative is recorded through a poetic dialogue between the artist, landscape, performance and practice of the wild and the people she encounters.

It’s been four years since Lay of the Land began as an idea hatched from other sides of the world. It was brought to life on the west coast with the generous support of our friends and family who believed in our idea. The project has allowed us to collaborate with incredible Irish and international artists. We spent time working together in the wildest most majestic landscapes creating art together. Now, as were enjoying some time for reflection we thought we’d love to know how their doing?

Editioning our prints . We created 4 limited edition prints in response to the landscapes of Kerry, Donegal and the Mizen Peninsula. This one is Lauragh, nestled in behind Glanmore Lake on the Beara Peninsula, on the border between Cork and Kerry. The prints were created in order to fundraise for our programme of events 2019. Thanks to everyone who supported us this year.

This dish really did make a lasting impression. Salt baked Celeriac from right from the oven. The Salt bake housed the roasting celeriac and when the lid was lifted everyone got to scoop out the silky celeriac. ( a nod towards the pit fire perhaps?!)
The celeriac was companies by greens from (thanks for coming Sarah!) and elderberry pickle foraged from .
Thanks to for creating such thoughtful dishes.

We wanted to create a truly special event last Saturday. The stables building provided a warm glowing environment for our dinner. The menu was a carefully arranged assortment of seasonal, wild & foraged ingredients. As well as performing her gorgeous sounds ’s dried flower arrangements adorned the tables in the long room. We chose to compliment the dried flowers with dried seaweed collected from the shores of the west coast. The small paintings were created specifically for the dinner by .studio who chose the colours based on the foraged ingredients used in both the menu and the inks. Blackberry, elderberry & walnut brush strokes. All under candlelight. What an evening. Thanks to everyone who came!

Our Story

We produce powerful, imaginative and considered projects that encourage artists and their practice to engage with the landscape.

Our projects include immersive short and long-term residencies and outdoor exhibitions in an ever growing number of rural locations throughout Ireland.

We support emerging artists whose practices focus on the landscape, and where themes of environment, community, heritage and collaboration are intrinsic to, and reflected in their work.

LOTL was founded and continues to be creatively produced by Kari Cahill and Hazel Mc Cague.
