Quick look back at our residency at the end of April 👀

It was a great week in the studio collaborating with playwright Simon Stephens on his play ‘Maria’.

Huge thanks to actors; Catherine Walsh, Cara Christie, Cormac Costello, Ava Manning, Ayoub Tomi & Joshua Wills who joined us to explore the piece 🙌

Some lovely moments caught here by photographer of our final day where we read thru the full script for an audience.

Thanks again to Zoe & Charlotte of the CTC for having us! 🙏

Gorgeous video by capturing the final day of our residency at the start of this month

We were in development looking at a beautifully challenging and thought provoking play, MARIA, by Simon Stephens. It has yet to be produced in English and we have been collaborating with Simon around this idea for the past few months. It was a joy to have him Zoom into the room before our reading and share some insights into his writing and the play.

It was a complete joy to work with a fantastic group of readers and people; Catherine Walsh, Ava Manning, Ayoub Tomi, Cara Christie, Joshua Wills & Cormac Costello. They brought such rigour, authenticity and consideration to the work over the day and a half! The conversations were HAD!

Huge thank you to everyone who came to the reading and big thanks to Zoe and Charlotte for the opportunity to dream and scheme. We’ve big hopes for this piece and it’s really special to us that the seeds were planted in the CTC. Here’s to growth 🙏

About the project:
MARIA is a modern take on the Mary myth. It is a triptych of ultimate questions: Birth – Love – Death. Set in a Port town similar to Cork, it explores loneliness and solitude in the 21st Century through the eyes of a young woman named Ria. The play interrogates human fragility and transformation.

We are using our CTC residency to look at the play through a ‘Cork lens’ with a view to production, while also grounding their collaborative relationship with Simon and the wider creative team.

Thursday throwback for a future announcement! 📣

A lil throwback to do some future promotion for an upcoming play directed by Al for as part of their Re:Directing series celebrating their 50th anniversary this year 🥳

Following the success of Infinity directed by the supreme Julie Kelleher in February, Al will be directing Constellations by Nick Payne, the second play as part of the Re:Directing programme of work.

A stellar cast and team behind this one and we can’t wait to fully shout about it more once it’s officially launched very soon!

Listed in the Irish Times’ 20 plays to see this year!

Delighted to have been granted a CTC Residency by kicking off next Monday (eek!)

We are excited to be collaborating with Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens on his play ‘Maria’. The play was originally commissioned by The Thalia Theatre in Hamburg and had its world premiere in 2019. To date it has been performed in German & Slovenian. It has yet to receive its English language premiere.

News about attending a sharing of the play to follow soon! We haven’t quite caught up with ourselves 🫣🫶

Today is a special day in the ALSA calendar as it marks the 7th anniversary of the passing of probably our greatest ever collaborator, Al’s aunt Breda

Breda’s stroke survival story became our first play SWIM/STROKE. An idea which we still remember tentatively approaching her about 10 years ago in the living room of her cottage. She wasn’t one to mince her words and effectively told us “who the F would want to see that!?”.

She was super hesitant at first, naturally nervous of her and our family’s story being taken and turned into piece of theatre. However over the course of the development of the play which saw two key work-in-progress sharings at & in 2017 - Breda witnessed these first hand the powerful impact her inspirational story had on the audiences who experienced it

As a company, SWIM/STROKE started the ball rolling - allowed us figure out how to make a piece of theatre - enabled us to build partnerships and relationships with producers, programmers & audiences - got us on the Arts Council ladder - the fully funded production of the play was meant to take place in 2018 but on the eve of pre-production Breda was diagnosed with an aggressive stomach cancer and we pulled it. However, it did inspire a majorly reimagined version of the play in 2022, AT THE MOMENT EVERYTHING IS MISSING directed by .with.a.k and performed by Al, which enabled us to use the Arts Council funding received previously and to honour what we had set out to achieve with Breda & SWIM/STROKE all those years before

The process of making SWIM/STROKE effectively set in motion the fundamentals of how we have made all our theatre to date - to work with caring, rigorous and sound collaborators to make theatre that is inspired by the mundane, elemental & hopeful stories that surround us.

We feel so blessed to have these memories to look back on and cherish. The special energy of those days still reverberates deep within the bones of us.

We invited videographer extraordinaire into our GULL development a few weeks ago. Zé joined us in the intimate surroundings of The Green Room in to video some of the behind the scenes

He expertly captured the company in the lead up to our first sharing of GULL that we did. The video clearly depicts our process at play, discoveries in the moment and the trust that we had in the collaboration. WHAT A JOY IT IS TO WATCH BACK!

On this WORLD THEATRE DAY, we pay homage to the wonderful videographers and photographers who capture the work so beautifully. Without them we wouldn’t have the documentation for future funding apps, the socials or just for prosperity. We have had the utter joy to work with some amazing creatives in this field over the years and there is nothing more exciting than seeing the first production images roll in after a dress rehearsal. So here’s to the folks who carry the camera on this world theatre day 📸 🎥 🎭
THANK YOU!

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our friend and performer Niamh Kavanagh.

Niamh was a truly gifted performer who could light up the stage effortlessly and a gorgeous energy to be around.

Al last worked with Niamh back in 2016/17 on ‘Will It Fit In The Van?’ by Conor Clancy & produced by which the photos are taken from.

Wishing her family and those close to her all the peace.
