A girls legs.

The societal gaze on a girl’s legs is often fraught with complex and sometimes contradictory expectations. They can be seen as symbols of beauty, fitness, and sexuality, yet also as objects of scrutiny and judgment. This can lead to a stigma where girls feel pressured to conform to specific body image ideals, leading to self-consciousness and insecurity. The media and cultural representations often play a role in perpetuating these standards, which can be unattainable and harmful. This can result in a fear of exposure or a feeling of being constantly evaluated, regardless of their actual appearance.

In the making…

The central element of this piece is a box, serving as a metaphor for the constraints of social standards. The box is made up of a collage of vintage, sexist advertisements, each image a relic of outdated ideals and expectations placed upon women.

Breaking free from this confined space is a doll. Unlike the images on the box, the doll is not a perfect representation of conventional beauty standards. Its appearance is unique, defying the norms of the past. The doll’s presence outside the box symbolizes a rejection of these outdated norms, a refusal to be confined by the limited roles and expectations of the past. It stands as a symbol of liberation, encouraging viewers to question and challenge the stereotypes that continue to shape perceptions of women in society.
