What does philosophy have to say about growing older — and should we fear it at all?

Following up a wonderful talk with Dr Elizabeth Mackintosh last month, we invite you to our next event: Philosophising on Ageing — with David Edelman

Since the ancient Greeks, thinkers have explored what it means to live a flourishing life. But a flourishing old age? That's a rarer conversation. Over two thousand years ago, Cicero made a bold case for old age and its distinctive advantages. We're bringing that conversation into the present.

Come ready to think, question, and perhaps change how you see the years ahead.

Rage Against the Dying of the Light Since the ancient Greeks, there's been a great deal of philosophical literature on living a flourishing life. But what about a flourishing old age specifically? Over two thousand years ago, Cicero stood up for old age and defended its disti...

Join Dr Beth Mackintosh as she presents her work as UK lead for the global project Philosophy in the Wild: Notes from a Biscuit Tin, inspired by the philosopher Mary Midgley. Drawing on Midgley's concept of the "mixed community," the talk explores the profound significance of multi-species living and our relationships with the natural world. Dr Mackintosh will also invite participants to engage with creative, multi-species activities drawn from her workshops. What does it truly mean to live alongside other species — and how might philosophy change the way we see that relationship?

If war destroys in the name of justice, and pacifism might not be enough to stop evil, how can we give peace a chance?

As wars continue throughout the world and new conflicts arise, the question feels less theoretical than ever. This Philosopher’s Hat invites you to explore the philosophical plumbing of the narrative of war; to wrestle with the uneasy space between conscience and responsibility, peace and protection, moral purity and political reality. This timely conversation will be led by one of our longtime members, Félim, philosophically minded ex-military who served in Balkans, Middle East and Africa.

Refusing the Sword Is it morally good to refuse the sword? Pacifism can be a powerful personal conviction — a refusal to harm, a commitment to conscience. But can what is virtuous for an individual also be virtuous for a society? For a nation? And what of the idea of...

What makes us human? Facts? Feelings? Language? Stories?
Join us Wednesday 19 February at 7pm (Irish time) for an online Philosopher’s Hat with Daithi Flannery — worker, thinker, talker, and unapologetic philosophecker.

On the night, we’ll explore how language doesn’t just describe reality — it builds it, why science alone doesn’t guide our morals, and why the stories we live by matter more than we think. Most importantly, we’ll ask: do we need a new story — one that reconnects us with the rest of nature?

Curious minds welcome. Hats optional.
