The Story behind Precious Pebbles By Verna

I’ve always enjoyed being creative and making gifts to give to family and friends. However, it wasn’t until the death of our beautiful little boy Edward that I realised the true benefits of creating art. Edward arrived eight weeks early and sadly he was born very sick. He fought so hard but despite his determination, the help from the medical team and the love that Peadar and I were giving him, the struggle was too much for him. After just five days we had to let him go. I’m so grateful and thankful to Edward for giving us those days. They’re days I treasure always even though there was huge sadness in those days there was so much love felt between Peadar, I and Edward. The days, weeks and months that followed Edward’s death were full of pain and I know the years ahead of us will be tinged with that pain too. Every day I miss him. What I’d give to be able to hold him in my arms. I use walking and art as my way of minding me. When I’m out walking I have my chats with Edward. When I’m doing my art the washing machine of my mind slows down and I feel calmer and more able to deal with how life is on that day. My focus is on the piece that I’m working on and I try to create a piece that will be enjoyed by others. In a way I suppose I’m being mindfully creative. I started off giving my creations to Peadar and then breached out to giving them to friends and family. They would be thrilled to receive whatever it was I had been working on. They’d say ‘You should sell them’. Eventually I took the plunge and set up Precious Pebbles by Verna. I know it’s because of Edward that I have realised the true benefit of art. We now have a little girl Ellie and a little boy Tom, who both bring so much fun to our days. Now I make my creations during their nap time and at night when they’re in bed. The rest of the day is spent playing, singing and having fun. I still get great enjoyment and calmness from being creative. Seeing gratitude and delight in family and friends when I give them a gift I’ve made for them is a great added bonus. I hope through Precious Pebbles by Verna when people either purchase a gift for themselves or to pass onto someone else that they get a sense of enjoyment and love that’s been put into each piece. This day 10 years ago Edward died snuggled up with Peadar and I. Our lives changed forever and a bit of my heart has been broken since.

But tonight, Peadar, Ellie, Tom and I were in setting up the room for the art and craft exhibition. And although it was the 4 of us setting up the room Edward is a massive part of the room. We have the Ireland of Love map in the room and our Remember Forever Keepsake decorations (known in our home as Edward slices ❤️) and they are there because of Edward and our fundraiser we do every year in memory of Edward. And every piece, card and creation of mine there is a little bit of Edward in them. So although today was a tough day in one way it was a day of love, of strength, of how we carry Edward and include Edward in our lives today and everyday. He is a massive part of our family.

Not long to go now till we’re setting up Whites of Wexford . We’ll be there upstairs in the Selskar Suite from this Thursday every day till the end of October.

Looking forward to getting all set up and having the chat, seeing the Ireland map grow and soaking up the atmosphere of the festival. If you’re in town pop up, say hi, have a browse, a chat and maybe even treat yourself or someone special to a piece of my work.

Really looking forward to exhibiting whi@whitesofwexford in a week and a half ……. I can’t believe it’s so close but bit by bit I’m getting there. Here’s a little look at some of what I’m bringing. Myself and Ellie started packing some boxes yesterday so the real prep has begun …..

I’ll be upstairs in the Selskar Suite of Whites of Wexford for the duration of the festival, Peadar will have his honey and the Ireland of Love map will be there too, the excitement and nerves are building ……..

My exciting news …….

So my photo from last nights post was me trying to figure out a plan or layout for a room that I’ll be in for the duration of the Opera Festival…….

For the last 2 years I’ve been part of Wexford Design Collective and have shared exhibition space with a great group of artists and creators in Whites of Wexford as part of the art & craft exhibition . This year though I’m being super brave (in my eyes anyway) and I’m taking a room on my own along with Harristown Honey. This is a big move and it is a bit daunting to say the least, the hours are long, the commitment is big and for me it’s big on so many other levels but it’s also a decision I’m very proud to be able to make and I know when the room is all set up and I look around there is going to be a great sense of achievement. Edward would be 10 this month which for me gives such an achievement even bigger emphasis and today when I was in the studio getting things ready a beautiful butterfly kept me company ❤️

I’ll have my framed pieces of art, cards, ready to frame mounts, gift boxes , keepsake decorations and some new additions too which I’m super excited to showcase. And what I’m really looking forward to bringing is Our Ireland of Love map which is part of our fundraiser in memory of Edward. It was actually at the Opera Festival last year that the idea of an interactive piece came to so I’m thrilled that I’ll have that with me too.

During the summer I was sent the .ie logo and asked to create a piece around it. A big thanks to for finding the perfect colour paper for the piece and especially just before closing time.

A steady hand, patience, time and teeny tiny pebbles were needed in this piece but I was really happy with how it turned out.
