My peonies are on their last legs. Like everything promising in life they shine brightly for a while, but there's inevitably some disappointment for nothing is ever perfect. Maybe we need to lower our expectations. Whether it's exam results, job opportunities, friendships or our ability to paint, we need to stop being so hard on ourselves. Sometimes things don't work out. So just let it go. I always think how cruel that old saying is, 'No use flogging a dead horse' but I suppose it makes its own point. One thing I've learned from listening to David Leffel is there comes a time when you stop looking at your set up and start looking at your painting. So I took out the middle flower in the glass vase. I think it's better. I want to subdue some of the flowers to make them fade into the background so that the star peony shines. This is the part of the painting process that requires intelligence. What to keep and what to leave out. One brush stroke can make a world of difference...bit like life really

Busy morning! Up with the lark lads and got these two still life studies under my belt!Just love these miniature oil paintings. They are not as easy as they look. Standing back and thinking 'shapes' helps enormously
