IMMERSION
For the duration of the coastal journey,
on a train occasionally dipping inland,
the young woman averted her eyes,
studying a device in her gloved hand.

She missed the quivering morning light,
enthralling me from my window seat,
as it gradually brightened all in view,
and gladdened me, head to heart to feet.

dark shapes of swimmers
parallel to the coastline
cutting through chilly waters
unperturbed by cold or brine,
terns gathered in clusters
next to a tidal inlet
trusting the promise of dawn
on a strand that seemed wet,
light skim of frothy frost
in back gardens and lawns
on skeleton branches and twigs
on limp flowers and fronds.

When the final station beckoned,
she suddenly raised pale blue eyes,
I felt like relaying all I’d witnessed,
under our clear December skies.

Didn't she realize how fortunate we are
to have natural vision to freely imbibe
such transient scenes, from train or car,
our world's offerings, too sublime to describe.

Train Infatuation

My heart skips , the first step
My bum sits comfortably
My eye loves to travel
And my legs di**le dangle
When the journey starts
I follow what is probably
Going to happen when
The movement takes over the brain
The music sounds in the headphones
I jump in the state again
Of falling in love
With the train.

The winning poem of Half Poem Competition is:

Train to where - I wonder? I must take the train…

It was the day after my mother had passed,
Catch the train - early morning - hungover + sad.
No money - no ticket - just hop on a line like a stray cat.
Just me, my handbag and same clothes as yesterday.
My disheveled hair & running mascara.
Ticket man - Please don’t ask me for my ticket... man!
Oh here he comes - what will I say?
“Ticket Please” - My heart was beating - I was scared.
Black tears rolled down my face.
I explained my story straight.
He stared at me, paused, took a long breath + said “you’re ok”.
A free ride on the train - yay!
A sigh of relief - now back to the grief + sadness.
On the day after my mother passed!
