‘I had, since the beginning, wondered what to do with those paintings that had figures in them - Annie and Denis McGinley, Rose Ward in the valley. Do I paint those without figures, do I add them for the sake of it, do I ignore those paintings. It occurred to me that this was one of the only differences in the place between Kent’s time and now. There are no people in the valley, no people living in Port (apart from the odd visitor like me), no haystacks. There is a farmer, but he is in my experience heard (on his quad) and not seen! There really are only the lobstermen still left here from Kent’s time so I would paint them!’
