Culture Night Donegal

Taking place on Friday, 18th September 2026, Culture Night is one night for all.

Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. On Culture Night, arts and cultural organisations and venues of all shapes and sizes, including the National Cultural Institutions, extend their opening hours to allow for increased access to the public. Special and unique events and workshops are specifically programmed at participating locations

and everything is available free of charge. Culture Night has grown from a relatively small scale cultural event staged only in Dublin in 2006 to the significant national cultural event it now is. The initiative has captured both the public imagination and the enthusiasm of artists and cultural organisations. Culture Night is brought to you by the Arts Council in partnership with the regional arts offices, local authorities and cultural organisations throughout the island of Ireland.

Donegal Music Education Partnership will deliver two lively, hands on ukulele workshops exclusively for residents of the IPAS Centre. These 50 minute sessions offer a relaxed, enjoyable introduction to playing the ukulele, suitable for all ages and musical backgrounds.

Participants will learn simple chords, play together as a group, and experience the joy of making music in a friendly, supportive environment. This is a closed session for residents of the IPAS Centre.

Artlink presents: Wind Chimes with Caoimhe Stones

Wind Chimes with Caoimhe Stones is a creative workshop for adults and teenagers exploring the history, cultural significance and calming qualities of wind chimes. Participants will create their own unique chimes using found and recycled materials such as jewellery, spoons, shells, wood and other unexpected objects.

The workshop encourages mindful making, creativity and a connection with nature, with participants taking their finished wind chime home to bring sound, movement and character to their garden or outdoor space. Drop in between 6.00pm – 8.00pm. No booking required.

Culture Night in Inishowen - Buncrana Culture Night Trail – 'Edge of the Atlantic, Heart and Sound of the Arts'

Watch Buncrana's Main Street come alive, as businesses transform into stages and cultural performances fill the streets. This year's trail will feature performances, exhibitions, workshops, live music, storytelling and creative experiences, while continuing to develop The Heart and Sound of Buncrana; a community-led cultural trail celebrating the people, places and creativity that make Buncrana unique.

Culture Night in Ballyshannon - Open Evening at the Old Barracks Studios and Gallery

The Old Barracks Studios and Gallery — an artists-run space in Ballyshannon — invites the public to explore its studios in the historic Old Barracks building. This special Open Studios evening offers visitors a chance to discover the creative environment, meet the resident artists, and learn more about their individual practices.

Artwork will be on display throughout the studios, with live demonstrations and performances and opportunities to engage directly with the artists. The event offers a warm welcome into this new creative space and celebrates the diversity of artistic talent based in South Donegal.

Goladoo Ensemble & Friends in Donegal Castle.

Enjoy an evening of the music of celebrated blind harper and composer Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), with the Goladoo traditional ensemble and Friends, in the highly appropriate setting of The Great Hall of Donegal Castle. Presented by the Office of Public Works.

Writing: An Evening of Readings with the Tír Conaill Writing Group

The Tír Conaill Writing Group has been active for over 20 years, with a membership focused on prose writing spanning from flash fiction and short stories to novellas and novels. In 2016, they published the short story collection Wild Atlantic Words under the name of MEAS Writers. The group will read selections from their work at this intimate evening event in the Railway Museum with tea, coffee and refreshments provided for attendees. No booking required.

Donegal Railway Heritage Museum on Culture Night, Friday, 18th September, 2026.

Music: The Station Sessions: Without Willow Live in Coach 58

Letterkenny-based folk duo Without Willow bring their elegant harmonies and virtuosic musicianship to the Railway Heritage Museum at the old Donegal Town Station, performing an intimate set in a historic passenger coach that once served the people of the county before the closure of the railways in 1959.

Without Willow recently participated in the museum’s Station Sessions music video series, and their set on the night will include the song written specially for that project. Their performance will be followed by a preview demonstration of the museum’s upcoming virtual exhibition on the history of railways in music produced as part of the Shared Island-funded Reconnecting Through Culture project, in association with the Alley Theatre, Strabane.

When Three Choirs Meet

Following the success of last year’s Culture Night event, EnCor Tirconaill, The Donegal Abbey Singers and The Bluestack Chorale are delighted to come together to celebrate not only their musical diversity but also unity through song. This is a free, community event for everyone showcasing Donegal Town's three adult choirs and their shared joy of choral singing.

Donegal Town Culture Night Launch and Information Hub

Culture Night in Donegal Town will be launching in style, with local tour guide and historical fashion enthusiast Niamh Coughlan kicking off proceedings from The Abbey Hotel at 5.00pm, with a free Walking Tour of the area around The Diamond outlining its rich cultural history.

Wearing one of her handmade historical costumes, Niamh’s tour will cover topics from manuscript culture and the historic monastic settlement of Donegal Abbey right up to the present day, rounding out with information and advice on the programme of Culture Night events taking place across the town.

The tour will end at the Abbey Hotel with a brief address from Mayor Anna Gallagher and a short performance by the Bluestack Chorale to get everyone in the mood to continue their Culture Night journey.

The Abbey Hotel lobby will serve as the town’s Culture Night Hub for the evening, with information and guidance available on the schedule of events across the town until 8.00pm.

Rosie Mullin: God Love Her – An Grianán Theatre Studio Space

Culture Night, Friday, 18th September, 2026.

6.00pm & 8.30pm. (Duration 40 mins)

Blending monologue and movement, this one-person-show created and performed by Donegal dancer and choreographer Rosie Mullin, explores the farcical and demanding rituals of domestic life in rural Ireland.

Drawing on personal experiences of growing up in a tight-knit family in Donegal, the piece examines the unsung burden carried by generations of matriarchal women who keep households running. The choreography addresses the anger and shame that pulls at our bodies. A raw story that resonates universally.
